I never used to get it, but after the disaster that was my 17" Macbook Pro and multiple battery replacements on the 15" Macbook pro, I'm not taking chances on this one. I just wish they had a non plus option.

Nevermind....

Any idea what the cost on standard AppleCare is for a 15/16?
Standard AppleCare protection for MacBook Pro is no longer available for the customers in US beyond the included 1-year warranty. Only AppleCare+ plans can be purchased for $379.

So regular Applecare costs as much as Applecare+?

£399 for AC+ and £399 for AC here in the UK.

According to Apple's UK team it is here. I received a link from a support rep to make the purchase. However, I'm going to call the team tomorrow to ask some more questions in case this is wrong.

Yeah, I talked to support about purchasing the standard plan over the phone this week and was told it's no longer available in the US but still available in some countries. Clearly they're trying to phase it out in the UK, too, if they're offering it for the same price as AppleCare+. Standard AppleCare just extends the limited hardware warranty and should be cheaper.

I recently read that select Apple stores are running a pilot program that allows you to buy AC+, after a thorough on-site evaluation, anytime within the first year. Hope they expand that to all stores.

Dont forget you will also be covered by EU consumer laws on minimum guarantees, which usually last for two years.

Some European countries even have a longer minimum guarantee, in Sweden its three years. I’ve used to get an MBP repaired before in its third year. The issue was well known and documented on the internet, wasn’t an issue at all.

That's weird because their own site https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202702, which was just updated on October 16, 2019, says "
AppleCare+ can be purchased within 60 days of your device purchase where available. In Japan, AppleCare+ can be purchased within 30 days of your device purchase. AppleCare Protection Plan can be purchased within 1 year of your Mac purchase where available."

So I guess that means it isn't available in the US, so we can't get it anymore. Lame.

Yes, and this is a relatively new thing, because for many years you had the entire first year to decide whether or not to get AppleCare. Until now, I have never had AppleCare on anything except my first Apple Watch (I sprang for the stainless steel version, which was pricey, and I had never worn any kind of semi-fancy watch, so I was afraid of possibly breaking it on a doorknob or something). In the end, it paid off because a little after 3 years had elapsed the wrist detection function failed, and they ended up sending me a new one (even though it was technically just out of coverage).

As for computers, I have literally never had a major hardware failure on a Mac (beyond something like a battery) in 20+ years of owning them, so I have not found it to be a necessity. However, I do like that they have now added the accidental damage clause (never accidentally broken a Mac either, but you never know), and the more I learn about how these newer machines are constructed and the costs involved when they break down, the more I think it might be a good idea to have coverage. So I decided to get it for my new 16". I figure at the very least I can probably get a new battery out of it in 2.5 years or so.

Got the AC+ rolling for my 16" MBP. Had to ring customer care to set it up as the it wont allow me to purchase from apple website.
Thanks for all the inputs guys.

I'm on the edge about this too, and this thread makes all the good points

Against: Early MBP 16"s might have logic board issues that might get covered with a program later on
For: The additional 2 years will definitely be used these days, lot's of swollen batteries

For base models tho, since AppleCare+ price doesn't scale with machine cost, it kinda is very hard to decide, and if something happens to your device, if you are obsessed with work continuity, you need to immediately buy a replacement anyway, since they don't offer temporary devices when your machine is being repaired :/

So, Against: Might be better to put that additional $400 for a new purchase, and sell the machine for $1000 for scraps

But if Apple gave temporary devices you could use while your main device is being repaired, I'd 1000% purchase Apple Care, however, I guess they know how their customers act at this point, so if they were this kind, I guess they'd sell less, so they gain from making us suffer

It seems as of September 2020, only AC+ is available at £399 within 60 days of purchase. Which is a shame, as I'm looking to buy a less than 1 year old Mbp 16" to save some money.
