I ran my smcfancontrol and selected a higher speed for the fans. The clicking sounds became faster. So I think its my fan. I haven't had this problem before untill tonight.
Maybe the fans just need to break in, or I could be badly wrong.

No clicking noise on my 2.4ghz macbook pro but I do hear the fan on the top left side when its at 3500+ rpm.

hmmm...I'm inclined to wait it out to see if there's an easy fix, or if everyone's affected, but my 14 day returns is up on Wednesday (not that I'm gonna return it) - anyone know if that would change anything?

I dont think its a bad noise if I'm honest - it just wasn't there before!

Hey guys, I bring disappointing news today.
I received the replacement 2.5GHz MacBook Pro (320GB@7200 RPM HDD) today from Apple, shipped straight from Shanghai overnight.

The problem with the Fan "Clicking" still persists in this new machine, even when it's fresh out of the box. (after it warmed up from booting)

The more disappointing part to me was the screen... When it is shut, it does not conform to the bottom part of the MBP (the unibody part), meaning the screen is tilted, decided to have its own way. I wonder which genius put this baby together...

Going to visit the Apple Retail Store near my place tomorrow, AGAIN! A Really Disappointed Consumer Here...

I recorded it, but garageband made it very loud, and over compressed it, so this is what it sounds like, but turn it down alot :p

Yeah SMCfancontrol kinda indicates that it isn't the left fan, though both come from the same area...any thoughts people?

oops, it didn't attach!

sorry, I had to usemegaupload as my ftp isn't working!

I have that same noise. It's there like 2/3 of the time now, even when the machine is idling. It becomes louder at times, and is quite distracting in a quiet room. I received mine (2.53 GHz MacBook Pro with a 250GB@7200RPM disk) on Oct. 21st and took it to the Apple Store the next day because of this problem. It didn't make the noise while I was there, so the genius couldn't hear it and asked me to bring it back if it gets worse. I'll take it back soon. I recorded the noise this time, which will hopefully convince the genius about the problem if he can't hear the fan noise. After reading that replacements can have the same problem (and possibly others!), I think I'll ask for a repair.

Well Apple was really helpful with me. They took my computer back at the store, tried to fix it and said there is no fix for it yet because the product is so new. So they are sending me a new one from the online store. Should be here in a few days.

Will be extremely disappointed if the noise is still there, but oh well... I will keep it I guess as long as there is no other issues.

excellent - went in store today, the guy took it into the back for about 3 minutes, then offered me a new machine and to swap my HDD! I'm 15 days from purchase too. The only downside was that another salesperson then informed him that they're sold out, but they're gonna call me ASAP when they arrive. Very happy :D

My new mbp has a totally same issue of fan noise (clickking sound).
Yesterday, I demonstrated the issue to the local service provider, they said it's from the fan inside. I didn't want to waste time to shipping for exchange and just wanted to fix the issue ASAP. But, I'm concerned new mbp's fan might be ALL defective. It could be a quality control issue or the product line has a problem. So, can exchanging part or exchanging new mbp solve the issue right now? It's a kinda early adopter's fate?

Based on the technical manual for a new mbp, there are two fans in the Left & Middle. I'm not sure which one is defective. Today, I'm going to pick up my mbp and update the result of the issue.

If anything I think that it's a defective fan. This could be just one batch from the fan manufacturer, or a design flaw...we'll see in the next few weeks I guess! I think that as AppleCare people have asked for people's old machines to explore the problem, and it has been acknowledged, that the problem should already be rectified, and if it isn't, then we would definately be able to pop in and have our fans replaced. The Genius today would have replaced just the fan, but he said it was faster to just give me a new machine :)

But do you still have the same noise issue with your new MBP???

I picked up my new mbp after repairing the fan noise.
They changed the right fan (Actually in the middle). I heard the noise from left speaker area, though.
The clicking sound's totally gone.

However, there was also no weird sound when I received the mbp at first.
After several high CPU temperature (over 80 degree), the noise occurred from the fan. Even if CPU temp. is over 80 degree, fan speed is about 3000 rpm. Is it normal? Could the fan be deformed due to heat? Actually, it seems that the fan speed is not reflective of the CPU temperature.

Anyway, After changing the fan, My mbp is as silent as death.

That's great. So they have the replacement fans at least in some stores then. Was it a retail store, and which one was it?

Mine goes up to 6200rpm when both cores are utilized at 100%.

BTW, in case any late-2008 mbp owners still have doubts about whether they have the same noise, I posted a pair of recordings here, comparing this weird fan noise to the normal sound of the laptop.

But do you still have the same noise issue with your new MBP???

dunno, they were out of stock :p I'm going in today to get it, so I'll you know. Not sure what's gonna happen though because I don't have a Genius appointment, but they need to swap my drive over...if they say I'll have to leave it there or come back, I'll just ask for a screwdriver and do it myself ;)

update:

got my new machine - quiet as a mouse (well as far as I can tell from within uni).

Was kinda worried because I didn't have an appiontment, but it was fine in the end. The first guy that served me told me that I couldn't swap the HDD because the whole machine needed to be returned, and it would require a Genius (i think). He then transferred me to another guy who have a little silver badge so I guess that means he's higher up and has authorisation or something who setup migration assistant for me. 1 hour later and its all lovely. My battery cover is a little looser than before, but that one was tight! Also, after we'd finished he goes "why didn't we just swap your HDD out?!" it's fine though - they were really helpful and didn't seem to have a problem

DOA Left Fan?

Can anyone with a new MBP confirm that the Fan Control Preference pane shows both left and right fans working?

Fan Control shows the left fan at 0rpm for me, but I'm not sure if that's just because it hasn't been updated with specs for the new hardware yet.

The machine is very hot, and I'm trying to determine the facts before I take it in to the Apple Store.

Mine shows that both fans are working at about 2000 rpm when the machine is idle. If I were you, I would check the fan speeds with iStat menus 1.3 or smcfancontrol 2.1. If they show 0 rpm, you likely have a left fan that has failed altogether. I'd also check the temperatures with iStat menus.

fan from left speaker

I'm having the same problem with my new MacBook Pro. I called tech support and they told me that my local Apple Store had the replacement fans in stock and could make the necessary repairs. I went to the Apple Store today, though, and they said that they had no replacement parts in stock since the MacBook Pro was so new. Also, apparently if you buy your computer online then the store can't give you a new computer -- you have to send it back to Apple through the mail and then wait for a new one...

I have this issue as well. I'm gonna call apple and the local apple store tomorrow to see if they have the fans.

If they have them, it should only take like 10 minutes to replace it, right?

er yeah, but if you want to keep your data, then i might take around an hour to migrate the data...unless they swap the HDD for you :)

Also, I think a genius needed to look at mine first, so you might have to make an appointment...in all, it took 4 days from me first telling them, to actually having my replacement :D

Well I called apple and they set up an appointment at the apple store. I get there, they tried to see if they had the fans in stock but they couldn't find the part and said something about apple having a "capture" on them, and I'd have to call apple and send it directly to them to get it fixed.

I need the computer for the next few weeks for school, so I probably won't send it in for a while.

Hmm, my noise doesn't sound similar to the fan noise posted earlier. I'm pretty sure its coming out the speakers. Seems like interference as if i use the trackpad more vigoursly(?!) the noise gets more frequent. It doesn't happen all the time though which is almost as annoying, if i take it into an apple store i bet it won't make a peep!

I'll try and get a recording next time it starts up, see if it sounds similar to anyone else's!
