This kind of thing makes me happy I bought straight from Apple. I had my share of issues with my first Retina but they got me all through it with a smile on their face. Even sent me a free case for my trouble. Stand-up company.

Best Buy has their moments. I've had good luck with their phone warranties, for example- they let me replace my fiancee's Motorola Photon with a brand new iPhone 5, for instance. And I don't think this is necessarily an issue with them. But long years of buying online has taught me that when possible and economical to buy from the manufacturer, do so. Cutting out the middle man saves time in the end.

I'm curious why you didn't exchange the computer for a new one? Well it's too late now, but just curious.

Also Best Buy accepts returns.

How long does the repair status usually stay on "Shipment to repair center pending"? I hope it makes a move today...

I would give Bestbuy a call and let them know what is going on, I bet they will say bring it in, we will swap it. I would then call Apple and say stop, I'm coming to pick up my computer, if it is too late, I'd tell them your not comfortable, you paid full-price for a new computer (e.g. not a computer that needs fixing), it's within the replacement period, and want a new computer.

Pretty much the best route to take! The OP is even entitled to a full refund and could then in return visit Apple and buy directly. This would be the only route I'd take!

Yea.. it still says "Shipment to repair center pending..."

So, is it possible to cancel it and take it back, and then bring it to Best Buy to get a new one right now?

Hm... just checked status right now and it changed to "Product received by repair center" and it is in "Repair in progress" now.

Not sure if "Repair in progress" mean they're actually currently working on it or not.

And I am not sure if they actually sent it or they might still have it in the store (where they ordered parts). Will I be able to find out whether they sent it or ordered parts by calling the store or apple support?

How long do you think repair in progress might take and when it will change to Step 3: Return ?

Haha, I was going to call them up about returning the macbook to me so I can take it to Best Buy but I guess that's too late now.

Stop asking crazy questions and call the Apple store. They have the answers.

I don't mean to just single you out, as others have done this as well, but come on guys, is no one even reading this thread?

The OP bought the computer at Best Buy, hence could not just exchange it at the Apple Store (though they are known to do this on occasion if they're feeling generous).

I know numerous people who have bought from best buy and other retailers and had issues within the first weeks and had them swapped BY APPLE

Alright, the repair status has updated, today it actually went from Repair in progress to Repair completed.

I checked right now (11pm) and it is in Step 3: Return pending: Apple store SoHo

So I'm guessing they're sending it back to the Apple store now and hopefully I can get the laptop back by tomorrow

Edit: It changed from "Product return pending" to "Product shipped to Apple Store"

Right, in my post, I mention that it happens, and have had this happen to me as well. However, it is an act of kindness on Apple's part and there are by no means obligated to do this, nor is it a guarantee that it will happen. It is against company policy for them to do this in fact. You should not expect Apple to make the swap for free and you shouldn't suggest to other people to expect this either, because chances are, they'll turn you away.

Exactly, I never said they were obligated, I was just surprised they didn't do it.

Yeah, it does happen, but it depends on numerous things, from how nice the genius is feeling/how nice you are to them, to what's wrong, to how busy they are (if they can turn it around quickly why replace it?).

Also, if it was an open box/CTO model that best buy sell, they cannot return it in store - they'd have to order a replacement from Apple.

Right, and I'm not surprised, because 9/10 times, they won't replace it because that's against company policy. 1/10 times, you might get lucky.
