I just bought a new MBP for my dad and upon start up the DVD drives make bad noises - that noise I would associated with a bad/scratched CD inside where it is trying very hard to recover data) - it works (computer and drive)... but I have never heard a DVD drive make so much noise while empty on start up. Of course I personally have never owned a brand new MBP.

If this a design issue or should I go exchange it for a new one.

Thanks for the feedback!

That's probably normal but without hearing the sounds it would be impossible to know for sure. The slot-loading DVDs make a zzzzh-zzzzp sound when the system first powers on to allow it to reset the drive and detect any installed discs. Do you hear largely the same thing when you eject a DVD from the drive?

Either make an audio recording of the noise for us to hear, or try a disc in a display model and listen for the same sound.

thanks

I guess I'm surprised that other than the start up chime... there is any noise at all. Gonna ask the apple store to reboot a demo model... glad to hear it is not 100% a for sure problem.

Regardless - I'm so jealous - I mean my new Pro is great... but after some time on his new MBP - I could see one in my future... probably next update... gotta use my pending severance package for something good....

It's not like it's loud or something is it? Its not like it's louder than the noise it makes when ejecting a disc.

that's normal, i think.
mine does the same thing.
just the superdrive checking to see if there is a disc in there. (i think)

i was kind of wondering about it too when i first got this laptop. since this was my first laptop ever.
but after the first day or so i just assumed it was normal, i guess?
i don't know.
