So is the multitouch update a physical upgrade or is it software? Obviously the pad is bigger, but is my March 08 Penryn MBP (last gen) incapable of doing four finger multitouch? How about the select-a-space-for-right-click feature?

OP to answer your question, no. only the redesigned macbooks have the "new" multi-touch
