They said the feature can help detect something abnormal (they gave the example of leaving a door or window open). If my heater suddenly requires 2x the effort to heat my home vs. the day prior, that’s a big win for me to know, and a big environmental win for Nest’s entire fleet to be checking for.

Agreed. It's not something that would be a huge deciding factor for me but it's a nice to have. I'm already getting the Nest report of my usage so this is more useful information.

I’ve had our Nest in Homekit for at least a year now. Have a 2011 Mac mini running home assistant; same machine has a lot of movies and TV shows that we stream to 3 Apple TV’s.
Not a wiz here, if I can do it, anyone can. Tried the Ecobee several years ago, sold the Nest 2, after a few months sold the Ecobee and went back to Nest 3. Just a creature of habit, the Ecobee seemed to give information OVERLOAD while the Nest was more simplified, your HVAC ran X hours, the end. Siri was also REALLY bad back in those days, she rarely understood commands to adjust the thermostat.

maybe you could share how?

I figured Nest had this feature for years. My Ecobee has. It let me know my heater was broken. And sure enough the igniter had gone bad.

Yea, I saw that after posting...not a great solution for the average person.

I definitely agree with it not being a great solution, it takes quite a learning curve to
get into, especially for most the majority of people, most don't have the skills.

Or the interest to learn, it’s a thermostat not worth the time

Curious what information of yours you think they don't already have.

Passing my HVAC operation to a slew of low end Handy Dandy HVAC contractors.

Thats great and all, but I’m not worried about my ‘Personal info’ reference my HVAC.

I also question how many homeowners actually have their HVAC systems serviced annually? I know I haven’t, [which is negligent], partially because I think we don’t think about these things until a problem presents itself. If this has the potential to save the homeowner thousands of dollars in repairs, it poses the benefit for those who just don’t have that mindset that they should service their HVAC system annually. I’m on board for something like this, but can’t attest to the first hand experience yet.

Clarification: We have our Cooling System serviced one year, our heating the next year. So, it’s every other year for each. :apple:

I was thinking to buy a Nest product one day until Google purchased it....

They will update it with location tracking, privacy breaking and adds. And only youtube prime users will be able to control AC in the summer.

To calculate time to heat or cool, you need to take into account other environmental conditions which are not always at the disposal to the thermostat.

Every machine needs service check and cleanup every year. In Romania, you must check your heating yearly and they do inspections.
For AC we do yearly cleaning and checking of the devices.

I understand it may make sense for other machines but G needs to come up with something more to convince me.
Ah yes, install Hangouts on the device...
Would love to see a source backing all of that up. Can you post one please?

It’s called sarcasm (maybe not the best one) and nobody claimed they are doing this.
But to quench your thirst for knowledge I shall oblige.

- you can Google “Google buys Nest”
- regarding adds and location tracking in Nest: Google “sarcasm examples”
- Google “ISCIR” - this will give Romanian websites where it explains that it is mandatory in Romania for everyone who has gas heating systems to run checks regularly
- for my own AC - I could share pictures next time when the service guy comes
- for Hangouts - Google “sarcasm examples” one more time to be sure.

Dude, I was being sarcastic again with my reply (probably not so good - I admit) but the entire post was meant like that because I don’t like that G bought Nest, since I am not a big fan of the way they handle and build products. :)

i have the honeywell lyric thermostat and it has been perfect.
honeywell have been around since day one and i like the fact that if the router/internet goes down it doesnt affect the heating/hot water and turns the smart thermostat back into a normal thermostat

Here's a screenshot of a Nest thermostat deep packet inspection on a Unifi controller.

Let is longer, just a few Kb for the remaining ones.
Is Google tracking here......seems unlikely, although I am no fan of Google either.

Just kind of turns into a roll eyes moment when somebody posts that old trope, (with nothing to actually back it up), and then again when it gets all the inevitable upvotes.

I don't think ANY connected thermostat is trustworthy. My Ecobee talks to Facebook and Amazon (despite never having consented / set up voice assist). I even sent them a support request which they've ignored. Apparently they don't give two Fs.

Ok, keep holding out for a better solution.

You can get as involved with HA as much or as little as you want, the Pi is common but I'm running it on a mac mini. I basically just set it up to connect to all of my non-HK friendly devices and then connected it to HomeKit. When all of the 80+ devices showed up in HomeKit I then was able to categorize them, name them and use them for automations and scenes. I can also tell Siri to adjust my Nest, its great. I dont really use HA much at all, I'm just using it as a bridge.
