New Nikon - The D610

I have a D7000.. wondering about uprgrading to the D610....

My old D300 and the 70-200 2.8 was the best lens + camera combo I ever had.

I miss them both...

Interesting you say that. I have the opportunity to buy that lens from work in a few weeks. Have read mixed reviews. We will also have some old D300's being sold off, but they have been used quite a bit.
Why don't you have them anymore if it was your best combo you ever had?

Well I sold the whole camera and lens stuff as lot of money was tied in it and I wasn't using them much plus I needed the cash for some other expense. I sold the lens in ebay for more money than I had bought it and of course it was in immaculate condition.

The D7000 is great but I don't have a great lens like the 70-200 anymore. I am itching for it but for casual photography I am hard pressed to spend that much for that lens again....

I loved the D300 for two main reasons,

1) Solid build quality. The full magnesium alloy body and the heft, it felt good in your hands.
2) I think that for an APS-C sensor, 12.1 MP was the optimal limit. Any more and you are just cramming more pixels than you should.

Mixed reviews on the 70-200? Don't believe them. Try one for yourself, if you can get used to the weight. You will love it. But I don't know about the new one that they have released, as I had the older model.

I don't know much about the lenses you have used but I will say that I recently got myself a new smaller lens AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G E to go with my 80-400MM F/4.5-5.6 G ED VR that I use on my D3x. I'm very impressed with the quick response and clarity from the new smaller lens. I am very happy with the D800e it hasn't let me down, had it for 6 months. I use an AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR on the D800e.

Don't forget the D7000 is DX unless I'm mistaken. The D610 is FX. Both mine are FX.

I personally would say that if you're going spend big amounts of money then don't bother with the D610, look at the D800e or the upcoming D4 S/X.. Try before you buy, if you can!

The 24-70 is a gem as well. My colleague at work has it and he takes some dreamy and creamy pictures with it.

Yes the D7000 is a DX and that's why I wanted the 610. Oh man the D800 is way out of my budget... 🙁

The older models had an issue with FX cameras where the corners would get darker just a tad. This has been fixed in the new version.

It is said that it was the standard staple for press photographers.

Just placed an order for one of these from Digitalrev.

I actually ended up buying the body + kit lens. And this is from someone who doesn't use zooms. I only use primes and in fact when i say primes, rarely anything other than my 50mm F/1.8G

28mm / 24mm is so ugly for portrait, street photos but its nice to know you have a decent, light lens with VR capability. I would most likely use it for low light static photos, street scenes (buildings etc). Likely used at at least F5.6 - F11. Lab tests show this is very sharp in the centre, a little soft at the edges unless stopped down. So for me, as i will be stopping down it's a good lightweight compromise. At £250 premium over the body only it would easy to justify against twice the price 28mm F/1.8G. However at it's full price of £379 i think a well priced 28mm might have pipped it. VR is handy tho!

OK, I agree that that oil on the sensor shouldn't have happened in the first place but this turned out to be an incredibly over-hyped problem. I read the posts in the reviews and forums and people were in a rabid panic over this.

A month after purchase, I took my D600 back to the store where they spent about 15 minutes cleaning the sensor and I haven't had a problem since.

The D600 is an awesome camera and I'm sure the D610 will be just a little better but I have absolutely no regrets…well done Nikon!

I will quietly suggest that the problem isn't actually overhyped - it exists and has done for a while with new Nikon cameras, not just D600. My old D700 had it.

I just clean the sensor myself - even though I get free sensor cleaning from Nikon.

On the D610, it seems to be a very good camera, and I agree totally with others above that the 24-70 is a superb lens, only shaded by the frankly awesome 70-200mm F/2.8. If you can have a D610 with both, you'll be happy.

Specs on the D7000/D7100 are very close to the D600/D610. What you will be getting is the full frame. Everything else is close. ISO, body, etc


There are a lot of people that didn't get oil spot on their sensors. So I'm guessing, just like the D70/D70s, this is one of those bumps in the road for Nikon. It can only get better. I can't wait to get my hands on full frame D610. I know it's a close to the D7000/D7100 if you are moving from D80/d90 going to a D7k not a huge jump as it would be a D610.

I bought a refurbished D7k hoping that it would have clean sensors. But found a few spots. But, I bought a kit and wiped it clean and no issues till now. I have dust on my D90 even without removing my lens. So like most people have been saying the oil/dust on D600 have been blown out of proportion. Some D4 users get oil on their sensor too. They just simply clean it and move on.

I would love to get the D800 but the weight of the body paired with a 1lb lens is too much for me. I was holding off on the D600 only because it was the first FX DSLR of that size. I jumped on the D90 when it came out. It's nice but there were some things I wish they could have added like 1080p and better AF in Live Mode. I'm hoping the D610 is moving in the right direction.
