I was lucky enough to receive a silver OM-D EM-5 yesterday.

From what I've been reading on dpreview, Olympus has started shipping these out early but they also are only shipping them out in limited quantities. I had reserved a black one from my local camera shop but a silver one came in. In comparing the two, I thought the silver looked sharp so I was happy to pick it up.

I'm not sure how true this may be, but the manager at Hunts Photo and Video (my camera shop here in Boston) mentioned that Olympus made a limited run of the OMD's so availability may be an issue. tbh, I kind of doubt this, I think Oly is betting the farm on the success camera. Either way one concern I had was that we could have a repeat of the NEX-7 availability so when I had the chance to buy one I jumped at it.

I've not had too much time to play with it, but so far, it feels solid. Its smaller then I expected - in a good way. The grip is smaller then I would have preferred. When using the Panasonic 20mm that I also picked up, the grip is not an issue. The rather large 12-50mm kit lens on the other hand would have benefited from a larger grip. I'll probably look for a more compact lens to use instead of the 12-50 but first I'll put that through its paces.

nice! congrats. m43 is a fantastic platform, imo. glad to see you picked up the 20mm - that is still one of the best lenses for that system.
regarding the grip, oly does offer a grip accessory for the OMD:

^^^ understood and I may very well order one. First I'll want to get use to it, and determine if the grip is needed :)

actually, i use my GF1 (smaller grip than the OMD) with the 14-140mm lens which is one of the heavier lenses in the m43 system and i haven't felt the need for additional grip. with the larger zoom lenses, i typically support the weight of the camera with my left hand on the lens anyway. plus with a zoom, you will be holding the lens anyway to zoom in an out.

A grip? I've never felt the need for a grip with my OM-1n, and the D is 3 ozs lighter than that. Admittedly, I only use primes with that, not a zoom, but I can handhold it down to 1/15th sec. with the 24mm. I am curious how well the new OM-D will play with vintage OM glass.

For primes you'll not really notice it, but for the 12-50mm kit lens. Given the weight and balance, a grip comes in handy to help. I can purchase a grip if I need too, but I was just making an observation on the camera design.

The OMD is a micro 4/3s camera and so the lenses are all off that format. You'll need some sort of converter/adapter for any other lens type.

I preordered one and am waiting patiently. It'll replace my E-P3 and fix my complaints of lack of VF without taking up the use of the hotshoe.

So any photos taken with the camera rather than of the camera :p

No, not yet

I've been too busy with work and karate the past few days. I'm hoping to spend some time with my new baby this weekend

Dang, that camera is GORGEOUS!

I don't like that it's silver, though. It's prettier, but I'd rather be shooting in all black. I feel the same way about my X100. Pretty, but it attracts attention sometimes and for my (new) preferred style of shooting, I'd rather the camera blend in.

But that's a really, really exciting purchase!!!

I wanted the black as well, but they only got in the silver and I figured a bird in the hand as it were. The silver one has grown on me, its classy looking and I'm pretty happy not only with what it looks like but how its performing.

I've just done some test shots, hopefully this weekend I can take it out and see how it works :)

I had my girls out at the park after school. I had the Panasonic 20mm at f5.6

Nice review and I think as usual Kai is spot on, though he seems a bit upsets that the OMD is not a more faithful representation of the classic OM SLR series.

Yeah, I thought the longing for the original OM SLR's was a little odd. But they never do their videos totally straight up, which often makes them more interesting.

I love OMD, saw them live back in their hey-dey, favorites are: Electricity, Enola Gay & Joan of Arc...!
