All those people buying as Christmas presents are wasting money?

Yes. Clearly some wait some don't. I like the need vs want analogy. I don't expect earth shattering changes but I am in the want category so I wait.

Again, why wait? And what mistakes? I don't see any. Lack of cameras. Whatever. Who needs 'em. I already said that. The second revision is likely to be minor, like the move from iPhone 3g to 3Gs. That's the way Apple does things. It's not going to totally revise it's iPad a little year after launch. It's going to add a few minor features to keep up consumer interest so it can ride on the wave of profits the iPad is still currently bringing in, before it makes a major revision to regain consumer attention and bring in more moolah.

Why wait? What major REALISTIC (teflon guy) improvements will be made?

I agree. Apple are masters at minor incremental improvements.

I've used facetime exactly once on my iPhone4, so a front facing camera adds no value to me. A rear camera isn't something I'd use either - I carry my iPhone everywhere unlike my iPad. When I use the iPad after using the iPhone I don't find the screen resolution too low, and I have a plug in SD card reader (again used once).

The only thing I miss regularly on the current iPad is the ability to play Flash.

I'm impressed with just how wrong that statement is.

Unless your premise is anyone buying an iPad is wasting money.

I don't even think its a need vs want.

If you need it, buy it.

If you want it, search for good deals used, but if you can't find any reliable ones, buy it.

If you kinda want it, don't need it, but do need the cameras and gyroscope, coz you know, face time and the gyroscope are the two most used features on the iphone.... (am i the only one who thinks the hype about facetime on the ipad is stupid?) Wait.

I'll be in the states in jan/feb, and i'm picking up an ipad. Why aren't i waiting? Because the current one does everything i need just fine? So why wait 3-4 months, for something that doesn't actually do anything extra that i need, just more stuff that i'll use once or twice and thats it. Sure more ram would be nice, sure a higher res screen would be cool, sure a faster processor would be neat and who can say no to more battery... but seriously... the ram is fine, the screen is fine, the processor is fine and the battery is fine.

I'll just upgrade at the ipad 3 when stuff REALLY gets moving. (i'd hope anyway)

I mean, the camera could be handy for me, but only because i work in the audio industry industry and for the live side of stuff i do cads and stage plots would be cool to have on hand, but realistically, i would much rather carry around a piece of paper than an ipad in that environment.

If you need it, get it. If you want it, wait.
I would go along with this.

IMHO, we'll see the updated iPad in the Feb-Apr timeframe. That's a good 2-4 months away.

I'm glad that I purchased my iPad 3G as it comes in very handy for a variety of tasks. I would suggest that if you have a need, go ahead and get it now. You can always upgrade if need be.

Intel i7 980X processor (2).
Dual ATI graphics.
32 gigs ram.
512 gig SSD. (256x2 in a RAID array)

Multi threaded apps.
(Which is why we won't see dual core arm. Plus does iOS handle multiple cores? )

Teflon coated so your bacon and eggs don't stick. ;)

Seriously, check out the refurbs, if you pull the trigger and later decided you want 2nd gen, you can give it to spouse or kids and buy a second gen, or keep the 1st gen until 2nd gens are sold as marked down refurbs.

You forgot the blu-ray drive!
Plus firewire port!
Plus 3 USB ports!
Plus direct connect to your head.

If you already have an iPhone 4, then there's no point getting the new one. I was deliberating this and thought, "do I really need the camera and better screen?". My iPhone 4 can do FaceTime already and I felt it was time to really try out for the third device (already owning a MBP already).

It really is weighing up the options and what you'll be using it for. The 3G is a must for me and I've started off on a basic 1GB/month deal with three mobile on a one month rolling contract. I didn't want to be locked into a two year deal which didn't offer me the ability to upgrade and I can sell/upgrade if the iPad was worth it.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do :).

Heres the way I see it...if you have an iPhone there is no real need for the iPad2. The whole camera idea is cool and all but really??? I can't imagine taking pictures with it. Secondly I have used my facetime feature twice and had my iPhone since launch day. I much prefer the impersonality of a text message.
