New or Used iPhone 5s? Which is smarter now?

Sorry for not being clear:

I need one that is Unlocked.

(sorry about that)

Apple sell the 5S unlocked at the Apple Store or online! It is $150 less then last year at this time. 16GB $500 32GB $600.

I think it the best way to buy! Just battery replacement is $79 alone. Use - you get no warranty, risk of iCloud lock or on the blacklist for a $200 savings!

I'm in the same boat whether to get a new or used iPhone 5S.

I'm beginning to learn toward buying it new, as then I will have a receipt from the Apple store, a brand new phone (with new battery) and a 100% certainty that it is not stolen, have being dropped or anything else like that.

However, I would like to save 100-200 bucks by buying a used phone.

And if I am buying the iPhone 5S for full retail price anyway, then I might almost go ahead and just get the 6...

Oh the struggles....

I bought a 32gb 5s unlocked from apple last week.

saves me from the hassle of a stolen phone
has a full warranty
180$ cheaper then a 64gb iphone 6

I prefer the form factor of the 5s.

Much better than the iPhone 4 it replaced.

I'm satisfied.

I think this is the route I'm taking, too.

I'll swing by the Apple store this weekend and compare the two devices next to each other.

I'll be replacing a NON-smartphone so whichever iPhone I get, I am sure it will be amazing.

Hi, all.

Your thoughts on the below, please . . .

As much as I want the latest -n- greatest technology, I've decided to get the 5s and wait for a year. My options are to buy it new from Apple (which is not exactly that much less money that the 6, it should be noted) or to buy it used, and then sell it in one year (for even less money :)). I would of course much prefer a brand new one, but I think the aftermarket value will be less than half in 9-12 months, if you ask Gazelle, at least?

If I opt for pre-owned, where do you think is the best place for high-quality, unlocked, pre-owned iPhones? I am a bit concerned about buying something that is faulty (i.e., was returned for a reason).

Thank you.

Buy NEW! You may become a victim of a stolen iPhone, one that is locked to a specific carrier iPhone, or receive an empty box. Otherwise, meet the person in-person.

What did you decide?

Half-way there...

I've decided to buy new (not used), but I am still on the fence about the 5s vs. the 6. I think overall I prefer the build quality/form factor of the 5s.

Right now, the cost of a new 5s is $100 less than the 6.

Does everyone think that in one year's time -- if/when I go to resell -- the 5s will be worth dramatically less than the 6?

I am just in the exact same situation as you are. Really going back and forth between these two. I will definitely keep following this post

I sold my 32gb 5s for $500 and it was in absolute mint condition with Evutec Karbon case and ghost armour screen protector.

If you can find a deal like that scoop it up. the 5s is selling for $700 + tax new here

This is either gonna make you laugh or make this really awkward... But did you happen to sell that phone to someone at a university?

Look at the resale / trade in prices on 5s vs 5 vs 4s as a guide.

Seems the two-generations old model fetches around $70 to $80 less than the one-generation old model last time I looked (but these things change). I'd anticipate the situation to be similar next year if/when you resell. Net effect is you save $100 to $150 now and get $70-80 less back in a year.

Either way, go with the phone that best fits your needs.

No, although I am from a University town in ontario. I sold it to a father and his 14 yr old daughter.

Maybe they sold it to you!

Haha what a rediculous coincidence then. 1-2 weeks ago my friend bought that EXACT phone with that EXACT case at that EXACT price. Crazy.

I used swappa recently to purchase a 64Gig 5s with 6 months of apple warranty left. Nice experience, and I would recommend that route.

I tried CL, but had multiple people back out of the sale, and others which set alarm bells off. On CL, you can do all your research before hand, and can still get a phone that can get locked the second you get in your car to drive off after the exchange.
