Is there a long needed upgrade/update for apple mail? God knows we need it but Apple has this obsession with secrecy and so I am reluctant to download this update until I know what is actually in it.

Dunno what you have waited long for, but there isn't much change in Mail. If any. Maybe some security stuff. Maybe look at other email clients.
