Packaging has been updated. Watch and band come in separate boxed but are wrapped together in a sleeve. The watch itself (at least the SS version) is in a suede protective cover. Looks nice.

The packaging for Apple Watch has always been incredible. Shame that the SS doesn't come with a case though.

yea I miss the nice case, the SS2 was the last one with the case. when I got my SS3 I was like where is the case :)

I honestly wish Apple would start selling the watch by itself with no band as an option with a small reduction in price. I know I am dreaming but its an option I always wished for and with this new packaging it gets my hopes up again.

Totally speculating here, but the fact that they are now separating the band and watch could start to lead to something like what you are suggesting. There was another thread mentioning the same desire. It would be a nightmare for 3rd party vendors, but Apple could exclusively do it. But even they could have inventory problems - what if you want a band that they do not have in stock? You then have to buy another band you do not want? Return it later, once used? I see some issues with your suggestion as well.

Anyone have experience trying to swap the band color of a new watch in-store?

I’m hoping they’ll allow this now that they’ve separated the watch and band.

People have reported success in the past, with the exception that the availability on the swapped band is limited to three choices. Never personally done it.

I'd definitely be okay with a black sport band! I think black goes much better with SS :) I think I'll bring the unopened S4 to the store and unseal it in front of them for the swap.

I preferred the plastic boxes when the stainless Apple Watch used to offer that for the first generation and Series 2, I found it to be a premium feature and a nice protective case that you could travel with if you wanted to. But I understand they stop doing that likely because of environmental concerns. But the new packaging looks interesting.

It's not surprising. Having the person put the band together themselves, along with showing the packaging of different bands may put it in their heads to buy more bands.

You know you can name handfuls of people who always wear the same band.
