Picked my 2.4 15.4" macbook pro at the store this evening. The new keyboard layout is great!

No yellowing at the bottom.

What's this "yellowing" you all are talking about? Is it very noticeable? Or just a minor problem?

Go to any apple with the Air on display. Look at the screen from an angle,... you'll noticed yellowish tint.

There is a difference between a color shift that happens from looking at the screen at an odd angle and the bottom 1/3rd yellow issue.

I think the latter is best seen by using that picture some guy in this forum whipped up where there are two white bars on top and bottom. I had a SR MBP where the yellow was so subtle that you couldn't see it unless you ran the test. However, once I did it bothered me, mentally, so much that I had to return it.

I think that if you have a serious case of yellow-and you're into color and light - you'll notice it immediately. Whites become yellowish-brown, whereas at the top of the screen they are crisp and white. This is localized and limited to the bottom of the display. The test is only meaningful as a confirmation of what you already suspect. If you haven't noticed anything weird with your display, please don't use the testbecause it may expose something you weren't bothered by and cause all sorts of problems for your sanity!

LOL I agree don't test it.
I did and noticed it right off. I was fine before the test LOL.
But the whites on the bottom do look yellow.

I reserve the right to be wrong, but IMO the "Yellow screen" issue was nothing more than typical angle viewing differences.

For those that "confirmed" their "problem" by using the image to compare the color of a box at the top and bottom of your screen I simply have one question for you.

Are the red squares different color on the top vs the bottom of this image?

And there's another option too for all pro models now:

Mark this box if you wish to receive an LCD with 1/3 yellow tint and 2/3 without. This benefits those who are very tall and who therefore do not like to work in the lower portions of the screen. It is also suitable for children who aspire to be graphic designers when they grow up, as the white balance in the lower 1/3 where their eyes are focused is very warm and provides more accurate color rendition.

Seriously, I'm curious about the yellowing too - has Apple finally addressed it?

LOL you should work for the Apple Marketing RDF team :p

No, they're probably not, but they do look different because of the background against which they're displayed. But the yellowing of the display is a different issue. it's definitely NOT a viewing angle issue since it occurs when you look straight on without any angle at all. Also, it's not about the test, but about how colors are display differently at different parts of the screen when viewed straight on. The lower part will have a yellow cast which means that any given color will look quite different depending on where on the display you put it. Not exactly great for even the most basic photo work. This is not just an illusion. There is a problem that does not fall within what is considered normal for laptop LCDs.

How about this one, it's a little more appropriate actually. The center dots are all the same shade of gray. Would you say the one on the right looks different than the one on the left? It certainly SEEMS that way.

The point I'm making is that SO many people were convinced that they had the problem by looking at that image and I know that at least some were falling prey to an illusion. I had just bought a MBP myself and looking at that image it appeared that my screen had a problem if I looked at it from certain angles. But, at least in my case, it was nothing more than an optical illusion created by the "test" image.

I think people were seeing an illusion. Especially the people that didn't see the problem until they used the image. Again, I reserve the right to be wrong, but I don't think I am.

I'm sure there were people who imagined it, but I also know that I didn't as I had several of them and one was really good with no yellowing. I've also seen a really terrible case of yellowing at tekserve on their demo machine, one which was much worse than the one I had. I think there are varying degrees of the problem, ranging from very minute, to a genuine urine-yellow tint. And another issue that factors in is uneven backlight which can make you think that whites are off because they're darker than other areas on the screen. Regardless of all the variations, it's not an angle problem since the real problem is visible when viewing the display straight on. It's normal for colors to get distorted when viewing from the side or from above/below - that's not the same issue as the one we're talking about.

So,..... is Penryn MBP LED fixed? People who got their PEnryn, please share,.... cheers!

There are still displays with the yellow, mine has it, its not as bad as some pictures from the last MBP version but you can notice after say 10 minutes very easily that there is a difference between the top and the bottom on a white screen. Its like a "white-yellow" where at first it doesn't seem like a big deal but after your working on your computer for about 10 minutes, the color difference becomes more apparent.

I think mine has it... what should I do. How can I be sure and Is it eneough to get it replaced?

well its within 14 days obviously assuming you have the penryn, take it to a apple store and have a genius look at it, usually apple is alot more lenient in deciding "what is enough damage" when your in the first 14 days. Like i have one with a very slight "white-yellow" problem in the bottom 1/4th, its actually so slight that its hard to see initially and you dont really start to notice the slight yellow until after youve already started using your laptop. For me its like this i think because when youve been say typing in MS WORD, you see the very top of the screen first in its very crisp white, and the more that you see this very crisp white, the more that the very slight yellow at the bottom stands out. They offered me a replacement and im prolly going to take them up on that. Although i have a slight white-yellow it still gets annoying seeing that little change in color.

I didn't notice the problem before not until I ran that test (should have ignored it). lol

Anyhow, mine is not really bad, only may be 3/4" not like some others a 1/3 of the screen. I ran the Pantone Huey Pro calibration and now it's barely noticible, only when I try to "see" it from a certain angle.

Also I just tried on my desktop monitors (both calibrated), a 22" Ben Q and a 19" Gateway, they are both HD monitors and looks great. However, when I lower my eye level to the bottom (looking a the bottom bazel) of the monitor and then look up, holly crap, the top 4/5 th of the screen is yellow! Just an observation.:p

all we hear is bad news about apple. they dont release a lot, they still release screens with yellow...its like...i was about to buy a mbp but now..im not very please to see i might get one with a yellow tint!

im pissed

the screen in this one doesn't have the YELLOW tint
make sure when you go to the genius bar.. have the take alook at the model number of this scrreen

you can do the tint test a 100 times and you won't see any yellow

Oh really? That's interesting... I guess that's why I had to exchange my new Penryn at the Apple store the other day, eh?

Come on, man... just because you may not have gotten one with a bad screen, you shouldn't go around telling people it dosn't exist. Might not be as widespread this time around, but there are still some out there.

I totally agree. This is not imagined. If it were, Apple would not be replacing MBPS for it all the time. What is amazing is how some people can't accept that just because they don't have/can't see the issue doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

have you checked the link attached to my previous post?
the one you quoted?
i ws referring to the screen there.
not MBP screens in general
i don't deny the existence of the yellowsh hue

Well I just got my penryn MBP today and what do you know, the bottom of the screen has a very slight yellow hue to it. Just to be sure I'm not imagining things I'm going to double check with my girlfriend before I go to the Apple store and request a replacement screen. I probably would have never noticed it if I hadn't read the forums on this. Also my keyboard on the right side is seated a little higher than on the left. It's werid it kinda like dips with its lowest point around the 'd' key. I'm gonna make sure they get the keyboard seated right too cause it's a little funky to type on.

One question for you guys, even though this is a BTO laptop, they should still be obligated to replace the screen right?

Yes. I bought BTO last summer,... but lots of problems. I wish I had bought stock as I can just walk into a store and exchange for another.

BTO, you have to go thru Applecare and that takes time!
