Should I get a new phone or watch ?

Right now I have a iPhone 6s Plus 128 GB. No watch yet. Worried my phone will be to old soon or outdated with iOS 14 coming sooner or later.

If I upgraded my phone I would get at least a iPhone X.

Neither. Save your money for something more important. (car, moving expenses, savings for future personal disaster etc).
Nobody needs an A watch. It's a toy. An iPhone could be seen as important by some, but there's no rush to replace your 6S. So what if it doesn't run iOS 14 or whatever. I'm using a 6 Plus on iOS 9 and have no compunction to use a newer iPhone until this one breaks.

Once your phone goes out of support, it makes it more difficult to update your watch. I think that there are 2 current versions of the Apple Watch OS out there since older phones (such as the 6) can't update the watch to its latest OS version.

And depending on what carrier you are on, you may want to consider the Xr or the 11 instead. Better support on T-Mobile and ATT.

Thanks I did not know this! Good to know!

BTW what do you mean by better support on T-Mobile and ATT with Xr and 11 instead ? We have ATT

I still have older models (SE) for a backup phone/line. Nice sized for backup phone that I don't use everyday. And though I would prefer at least another year of support (which is still possible for that and the 6s, we don't know yet) for a backup I can handle it going out of support. Still works.

The Xr (and the Xs from 2018) and newer phones support Band 14. Which may help in some areas that traditionally didn't have ATT coverage until they started building out for Firstnet. My understanding of B14 is that while it is there for First Responders, if there aren't issues it can be used by regular customers. B71 on T-Mobile was also added at the same time in the iPhones. The X didn't support these bands.

Of course, I like to improve my odds of having coverage on road trips in case of emergency. I'll occasionally drive through Kansas/Nebraska, and anything that helps makes me feel better. As well as a Verizon MVNO on a extra phone for $5/month.

Aside from iPhone iOS support, how is the battery life on your iPhone 6s? That’s what I would be asking if I were you. Is if you need to replace the battery, do you upgrade the phone or just pay for a battery replacement? If you have a healthy battery and are content with the iPhone 6s as is, then I would consider the Apple Watch, which is a huge benefit, especially if you’re into Health with all the metrics it offers.

If I were you I will update my iPhone first to an iPhone 11, and then if I would want it, maybe I would buy a Apple Watch, because it’s not as necessary as a phone.

So if you buy with your carrier, you are going to have better price in whatever phone, only if you have one of the better tariff

Of course the jump from an iPhone 6s to an 11, X, or XR will be dramatic in terms of performance, camera, ability to run the latest iOS and apps, etc... but what matters to you? One approach is to keep the 6s until it's causing you frustration, but if you are posting this I take it you are feeling that it's time for an upgrade.

The Apple Watch is a totally different thing. I love my Apple Watch. I bought the first one in July, 2015 and now I wear an Apple Watch Series 4. I'd still upgrade the iPhone first though. Then you can start thinking about the Apple Watch... as long as you aren't buying the latest generation there are deals to be had.

Get an older Apple Watch S3 and the new “budget” iPhone due out in March... then you’ll be set for a good few years to come.

But even when your 6S no longer received updates from Apple, it will still work perfectly fine as long as the battery is healthy.

If I couldn't afford both my preferred choice would in fact be neither where I would wait to replace my phone when I needed to. Having a 6s your upgrade date can't be that far away. And "oddly" (I say this with a hint of sarcasm) when buying one thing I often find it precipitates the need to replace something(s) else whether they truly needed it or not.

The most important thing you probably need to predict here is when you will need to replace the phone, the more important device, in of itself. If you decide that's within say 3 years you need to be able to afford buying both within that 3 years if you bought the watch today. Buying a watch today won't freeze your phone in time and usefulness. This also doesn't take into account how long you think you'll have the watch as you'll need to think about the flip side and upgrade cycle of that as well.

I tested out my friend's Samsung S10 on AT&T and got no speed increase over 4G LTE vs my iPhone 6s Plus :(

First off!!
What iOS is your iPhone on?
Secondly, how good is your battery holding up?
these two question I think is the reason how I got my new iPhone and Apple Watch.

I had an 6s plus jail broken but wanted an Apple Watch. My wife gifted my an aw series 4 and I happily updated myphone from iOS9 to iOS12, because of the fact watchOS needs to run on the newer os

since my phone was a launch day bought, it had a depleted battery andwould not last even 5 hours of small usage.
We went to Disneyland this December and wished I had a better camera. During this trip my wife’s 7 plus screen cracked.

Came home from trip and a week later we took advantage of the buy one get one free promo at Verizon. Now I am a happy owner of the 11 pro max.

if your phone last a full day I’d say get the Apple Watch. If not then a new phone is worth it. Just get an Apple Watch during black friday

I really like my AW. I have a 6S+ bought when they came out. I bought a AW S0 when they went on sale at BB pre-Christmas to see if I liked it or not. It turns out I did like it. I upgraded to the AW S4 on launch day because of the ECG feature and was disappointed when it didn't work. When Apple finally activated the ECG, I was, again, pleased with my purchase. I am still using my 6S+ and will continue to do so until a 5G iPhone with the features I want is available. That said, only you can decide what device meets your needs or wants. If you choose phone, I would definitely wait for the 2020 phone releases.

Watch! I love my Apple Watch. I love the fitness features, closing my workout rings. I love that it warns me when I’m in a loud environment of 90db or more. I also appreciate texts on it. I do limit my notifications though. I also like glancing at the weather, or compass. It’s been a pretty useful gadget for me.

My watch is far from a toy. I use it everyday for notifications, phone calls and etc. it’s a tool not a toy. There’s times at work where I can’t be on my phone but I have my watch and can see if I have an important call coming in.
