Some Smartasses don't work at 7-11 but carry corporate phones requiring complex pw's. While a (accurate and reliable) sensor controlling purchases would be convenient I'd be happy with it just unlocking my phone.

blackberry's never had any fingerprint sensors, yet still all major corporations used them due to their ability for high security. So your argument really doesn't stand and all you're doing is searching for some excuse that the fingerprint sensor is "the next big thing". All it is is a useless gimmick.

Huh? My company is forcing me to use a complex pw on my iPhone with a short duration auto-lock. It's a hassle that I tolerate. If an accurate and reliabje fingerprint sensor is implemented for even unlocking and assuming my company adopts it's use then it makes my unlocking my phone much easier and efficient.

Maybe I misunderstood your reply but as I interpreted it you have missed the point.

Or maybe this is the case?

If it's implemented property and actually works well, it'll be a big deal for some people and will be "the next big thing" for them. Just because it doesn't make sense for you doesn't mean a lot of people aren't looking forward to it and that it's a gimmick.

I think (hope) that Apple will have pretty broad implementation in terms of password saving on sites as iOS 7 gives websites the ability to not allow user log-in info to be auto-filled anymore and perhaps this will be a step towards replacing auto-fill, like you'd go to a website with a log-in screen and it'll pop up "swipe thumb to fill form". If i could just swipe a thumb to authenticate and log in for websites, the App store, etc., it'd be great and I'd be really looking forward to it.

Of course, this will all depend on whether or not it's done well. But if it is, I'm going to love it far more than the maps introduction (even if that was implemented bug free), camera upgrades, or Siri.

My only issue now will be ensuring that when I'm asleep my kids don't sneak into the room and try to covertly swipe their phones across my thumb to download apps. :D

Hopefully Apple has a FPS. Main reason it will lead to a multiple function device down the road. Also to stick it to Samsung.

I dreamt last night that the new hardware sensor was a breathalyzer to prevent drunk driving. You heard it here first.

It'd also prevent my college friends drunk texting or drunk dialing me. Can't use your phone unless you pass the breathalyzer!

If you're buying a new phone just because it has a figerprint detector, you're pretty idiot.

Also, fingerprints can be easily faked.

That way will not work on most finger print scanners now. Even the "cheaper" ones that my work uses and I don't even work at a place that uses "advanced" technology. Just a grocery store. lol.

and we come back to the start of it all - laziness:D

Redial, cut & paste, Siri, etc are all short cuts to help with efficiency. So those who appreciate them are lazy?

I think you're merely living up to your profile.

Now i've seen the higher rez shots of the new home button wiring loom i'm gonna suggest two things.

  1. This doesn't look like a physical button, ie something that will depress. More likely it will be electrostatic/capacitive control like on the 3rd gen original ipod.
  2. It definitely looks like a sophisticated processor is embedded in the wiring loom next to the alleged button/sensor.

I had the 3rd gen ipod and whilst i enjoyed it, electrostatic buttons at the time were painfully hit and miss. Aside from working well i'm hoping five things here.

  • The button is illuminated to aid in finding it.
  • It can change colour or flash to indicate that a biometric scan is needed.
  • Notifications can be set to flash/colour the button rather than lighting up the display.
  • When you touch it you get haptic feedback to confirm you've touched/fingerprint has been read.
  • Per authentec's old website we can use this as an offscreen controller, a bit like a rollerball. Slide your finger over it and it can act as a analog direction control. That'll make FPS's on the iphone a realistic proposition.

:D
