Does Apple still put a bit of foamy-plastic between the keys and screen when it comes out of the box?

I've used that sheet in my iBook for two years now, just to keep the screen relatively clean, and to keep stuff off the keyboard when it's running Folding@home overnight.

If they still include it, I'll probably do the same when I get my 15-incher (hopefully, in a couple of weeks).

The "gap"

My 12" PB also has this "problem". I didn't think much of it when I first received my PB, because I was so happy! Hey, wait..I'm STILL happy!

But lately, I've been paying more attention to a "warp" on the screen shell, or is it the bottom of the laptop? I'm not sure, and I don't care.

My latch operates with perfection, and I haven't had any problems with it not locking, or unlocking.

I just got a compliment yesterday about how small and convenient my laptop was.

I'm happy.

pimentoloaf: Yes, Apple still puts the sheet of thin foam between the keyboard, and screen when you pull it out of the box. Occasionally, I still use that sheet.

My 15 alBook has the problem with the latch not catching. Just curious what some of you others have done to fix it/who you called and what the outcome was.

Latch problem, and different display issue

Hi,

(I have a 3 day old 15" superdrive PB)

I also seem to have a latch problem, where the lid bounces up of its own accord a few seconds, or minutes after I've shut the lid. I think I've narrowed that down to being too gentle, and the latch catching at an angle. If I do it a bit quicker, the latch catches fine it seems.

I also have another problem that I noticed a day after I got the powerbook...

I have small imperfections in the backlight at the bottom of the screen. Unfortunately I do not have a high resolution image of the problem, so I took a quick grab with my extremely low resolution mobile phone:

If you look at the border at the bottom of the screen, you will see two dark patches (and what seems to be a bright patch).

Anyone else got this sort of issue? I've got a replacement reserved at a store for Tuesday when I'm next off work, but I'd like to know if someone else is seeing this...

Thanks,

Sid

Same problem...

My bro had his new 15" superdrive powerbook for a day and had to send it back due to the cover not closing/the latch not catching, Apple suggested they could fix it and send it back but he suggested a whole new powerbook. Apple complied and once Fedex picked up his old one they sent out a new one....
One of his friends order the same book and ipod he did, hopefully he won't have the same problem.
When you pay that much money for something like that from a company like Apple you would think their QC should be flawless. At least they're looking into the problem....

casualty...

well, guys

i took it back.

i will wait for revision b. my 15 was replaced three times. the first time it was for three stuck pixels, the second was for white "pooling" and the third was for the same plus the screen being warped.

My 1ghz superdrive ti has served me flawlessly, and feels much more solid and refined(well, it is more refined) it just seems like a more solid machine to me. as much as i liked the speed and built in bluetooth,as well as the new graphics card, i just couldn't allow myself to accept the second rate manufacturing that is taking place here. The apple genius (a great guy by the way) even told me that they have had far more first run problems with this book than with any other. he then gave me a full refund with no restocking charge.

I love the book, and i really want it, but i'll just have to wait.

I bought a canon rebel digital SLR instead.

I'll just revel in you guys enjoyment for now, and then by a g5 powerbook next fall!

cheers, and good luck with your great new books!!!

technocoy:D

Technocoy, man I feel for you. It must have been hard to give it up and not get a new one in exchange.

I have a 12" on order (which was pushed back a week), and I hope it doesn't have any problems. I've been without a laptop for several months now, ever since my old TiBook 400 died. I waited patiently for the new ones to be released, only to have my order pushed back. Sounds like Apple is having some serious quality control and engineering issues. Going by the internal documents, it seems like they are still having problems with wobbling PBs, feet coming off, latch problems, etc. You'd think that this would all be worked out by now, given that the aluminum case design is going on almost a year old now.

If my new 12" comes in defective I'm going to kill someone. Ok, no murder, but I will scream very, very loudly.

i dont know what to do...i got my first apple, and moreover, my first laptop ever yesterday. and i had no problems yesterday but today the latch will catch and it will seem firmly shut but then it will randomly pop up. does anyone have any idea what can be done about this? i really dont want to send it back but i really dont want my computer to wake up when its in my bag because the latch came undone

I have the new 1.25 G4 Powerbook and it does not seem to fully close. It latches, but there is a gap. i ahve already become one with it and I don't want to even exchange it for a new one.

1. Anybody else having a problem?
2. What do you think Apple will do about it if I take it in?

If the latch catches and holds the lid closed, the spring of the screen hinge keeps the screen from resting on the keyboard. If it latches, it's within the needed tolerance. I will not return mine which is working as you have noticed, because everything is working flawlessly. this my fourth PB (the first a 520) and it is the best by far.

Perfection is the enemy of excellence.

Yup, this worked for me too! Thanks for posting. I was so gentle with closing it that it wouldn't latch at all, I thought it was defective. But after pushing quicker it did indeed close. I do notice that it looks like the latch isn't quite all the way under, but no big deal, it still seems secure. If I was really concerned a little nudge with a card is all it takes. Awesome machine so far!:D
