Updated TiBooks?

We just received our 667 TiBooks ordered before Christmas - I think the shipping delay is entirely due to the combo drive - no new models until MWNY. By the way, this thing rocks and a lot cooler than I anticipated. I have configured nine of them over the last week for other folks in the office - very nice :). I would like to see a speed bump in the Finder with 10.1.3

cooler?

this is the second time i have heard from these forums that the latest powerbook g4 tibook is cooler than the first generation of the tibook

i wonder what apple did to the laptop to make it cooler, or could it be a newly designed g4 chip from motorola?

it makes sense that a titanium shell will draw heat away from the machine and thus fell hotter than a plastic shell laptop...the main difference is if the processor stays cool , thus working at its fastest with its bus setup, software, and available ram

not quite what happened, although a good guess. im not sure exactly how the new chips got cooler but i do know what happened with the first. the chip is simply extremely hot. the reason in fact we got Ti wasnt because of some look apple was going for (as many who claim apple copied sony would have you believe) but because the g4 chip was so damn hot they had to completely reengineer the entire computer and basically make the whole thing a heat sink. despite this the first powerbooks were still too hot. most people i know have had them overheat and shut down. never heard of any permanent damage resulting from this, just no computer for 3-12 hours while the machine cooled down. well i guess thats note ntirely true. i did see one machine whose keyboard had completely melted in, no damage to the underlying components but obviously a new keyboard was needed. as with any rev a machine its got problems and i would claim not worth the risk (sorry all you imac2ers). i supose i should note that none of these machines were operating in any extreme temperatures and all had proper ventalation (not sitting on a blanket or something but on a desktop where air can flow around). the melted machine... all i know was it was at room temp but it may not have had ventilation (user wasnt clear). obviously apple fixed this somehow in the revb models, probably like networkboy guessed it was some sort of chip revision, im sure someone can fill in that bit of info for us (or i suppose we could stop being so lazy and look for the info ourselves... nah)

:) still imagining that sphere. i see it balanced midair on a cushion of air released from a base unit, that cools and suspends. (ok so suspending a computer even as small as the cube on a "cushion" of air would require some serious airflow but leave me lone im imagining). it could sit in a divit(sp?) of some sort i suppose one that was clear similiar to the cube base. ok nuf imagining this is silly.

speaking of "new powerbooks" (am i quote happy?) i was talking to some friends today about laptops in general. a recent purchaser of an ibook was telling me that it was preferred over the powerbook because of size. it made me realize the dualing forces in powerbook "wants." some people have taken the widescreen to an extreme and made mockups of cinema display powerbooks with full size keyboards (some ive seen even have cup holders!). other people keep reducing the model, making it thinner and thinner (some people suggesting a retractable display that rolls up very compactly like a projection screen!).

then i took a look at a dell laptop near by and let it remind me of the problem with peecee laptops. well we all know they are severly underpowered, but i was thinking about battery life. i cant stand the short battery life on the powerbooks (i cant imagine even shorter battery life on most peecees).

this brought me to some rumors of improved powerbook battery life utilizing ipod battery tech. made me realize that would be the next big step in power portable computing. O sure we can all coem up with wishlists but at the top (above even improved airport speed) i would put longer battery life. i have 2 batteries in my powerbook at all times (1999g3) i cant imagine downgrading battery life with one of the new powerbooks.

ok that was a long winding story. :) sorry kids.
