I just got a new G5 PowerMac Dual 2.0GHz today and I love it! :) However, I too, experience the faint chirping noise every second or so. It sounds like one of those machines that tracks your heart rate haha. I have my computer in a desk where it blocks most of the noise so I'm not worried as long as the noise is not a sign of impending doom. I am just glad I am not alone :p

Don't buy dual G5, Beeping sound and beyond

My dual g5 2.7 beeped once per second from the day it arrived. Reduced or automatic processor settings didn't help. I went back and forth with "Apple Care" and they acted like they had never heard of the problem. I asked them if we could call it DOA and return it without a 10% penalty (in retrospect I should have taken the 90% and run). They were slow enough in back and forth communication that my 10 day window expired, doesn't take Mel Gibson to declare this a stall conspiracy.
After above delays, they finally insisted that I take it to my Apple Store. They replaced the power supply which made it better (only beeped on max. processor setting). Three days later it died totally. Now, they said I should buy Apple Care (on my 3 week old machine) so someone can come to my house, and NO WAY can they take it back since I was stupid enough to get it repaired..... I remember now, repairts are their way to get you married to your ailing CPU....
Back to the Apple store, will try to escalate with customer relations once they return on Tuesday... I feel like I am a beta tester for Apple.....

hello everyone. i too have experienced this problem with my new 2.3 ghz machine. firstly i can hear this beeping sound every second from the machine but when i have my speakers running i can hear the beep aswell as some noise whih seems to get worse when i move the mouse or open a window. my query is. ...are many of you with or without this problem running your mac into loud speakers. i have professional monitors for music and this noise is as clear as day on them. my machine is currently being looked at by an apple service guy. and he phoned to say they couldnt find a fault. but i questioned what speakers he was using and he told me those little pc things. i dont hear this noise on the output at low level but when i turn my mixer up(not that loud just but loud enough to enjoy a decent track to it is very noticable) perhaps some of you who havent found this fault shoud try turning your system up. I have run my old G3 and my PC through same mixer and speakers and have not witnessed anything like i have on my 2.3.. i hope you people who have not witnessed this noise issue genuinly dont have it cos it means the replacement i get might not suffer from this issue but i have this terrible feeling they all have this problem...

I'm wondering if anyone has brought this up yet, but this sounds similar to an issue I've experienced with PC's - COIL WHINE

Basically eminating either from the caps/coils in the PSU, or on the motherboard.

My last PC, before I switched, would make beeping/chirping sounds dependent on CPU load, and particularly dependent on graphics load. ie. it would be silent if the screen was showing just the desktop (with zero motion) and would chirp and whine if you were to drag a window across the screen.

Occasional topic of conversation over at www.silentpcreview.com I know they've chatted a lot about the mini (quiet) and the PowerMacs (loud wind tunnels) but I haven't seen anything on the new iMacs.

Need to start looking I guess, as I just ordered a 20" last night.

edit - guess I should have added - while it may be noisy, it doesn't mean the component is defective. SPCR maintains a list of noisy mobos, and we tend to stay away from them. There are some messy mods/fixes that usually include coating the offending coil in melted wax, or hot glue, to reduce/eliminate the resonance that leads to the beeping/chirping

Wow, sad to see so many people having problems with their Power Macs. For what these machines cost, users shouldn't have to put up with things like this.

For what it's worth my SP1.6 doesn't make the sound. I'm fairly certain I'm on 'Automatic'.

Ok, so I've been sitting for hours listening to my powermac 2.5 and I don't hear the chirping sound or beeping sound. I sat there so for long trying to hear a sound that I think I actually imagined that I did hear something. I haven't had any issues so far (jinxed myself here).

NAP and Chud are not solutions as disabling NAP shortens the life cycle of your CPU, but don't quote me on it.
