Ok, so i have xcode installed on my mac and today i was looking through some of the files and i found a new preference pane. Goto Developer-Extras-preference panes and double click the processor icon. Now in your system preferences you get a new icon for your processor. It gives you the option to turn off one (or more presumably) of you processors, which may save you some battery life. Check out the screen shot.

It will actually worsen your battery life - dual-core processors are designed to be most efficient when running both cores.
