I've been checking the apple store. They've just lowered their prices for the refurbished iMac models. I presume this is part of clearing out inventory for the new iMac release soon.

    My question is:
I am about to buy my first Mac. I've decided on an iMac. The 21.5" Core i3 is the same price as the 27" Core 2 Duo. Which one should I get? It's main use is movie editing in HD.

Here's the Link to the Refurbished Models

Get the i3 21.5" for HD movie editing. I've got one and its handled anything I can throw at it, plus it manages head a great deal better than my MacBook Pro ;)

So do you think imac 21.5" with i3 still better than mbp? Do you talk about 2011 mbp?

I'm just curious, how's 2010 base imac perform compared to 2011 base macbook pro with dual core i5?

I haven't got the 2011 MBP, mine is a Core2Duo 2009 model. However I think that the iMac i3 would preform better than the MBP i5 because:

    1. The iMac has a higher clock speed of 3.06Ghz compared to the MBP which is only 2.3Ghz.

    2. The iMac has a much bigger screen - More suitable for video editing.

    3. The iMac handles heat MUCH better when a heavy load is put on it.

BTW I'm assuming your talking about the 13" MacBook Pro, correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes i'm talking about 13" base 2011 mbp because they're priced equally. Now out of my curiosity, I'm comparing geekbench score for both:

    MacBook Pro (13-inch Early 2011)
    Intel Core i5-2415M 2.3 GHz (2 cores) 5945

    vs.

    iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2010)
    Intel Core i3 540 3.07 GHz (2 cores) 5704

I think they're both score roughly equal, but i must admit that's a  score for new base MBP, considering they use mobile and lower clocked processor (though i5) and lowlife IGP for the GPU, compared to base iMac with desktop i3 CPU.

But you don't get gorgeous IPS display with new 13" MBP. I personally would go for 2010 21.5" iMac because i love going big. And if OP suddenly feel the need of mobile Mac, just get the base 11" MBA, how cool is that :D

You forgot about the iMac's video card which is superior to that of MBP's (13" of course) and 7200rpm HDD vs 5400rpm HDD.

But even though their technical performance is the same, in real life 13" MacBook Pro's get bloody hot (Over 100C) when you floor it while the iMac stays as cool as a cucumber.

And this is just my 13" Core2Duo MacBook Pro, imagine an i5 on your lap
