I may be slow to realize this, so don't scream if this is common knowledge - I turned off 3G while I'm at the office, because I don't get much 3G reception in the building on the 18th floor. Plus I figured, I really don't need it while I'm not on the web and just have my exchange mail push on, Edge should be fine.

Well what I just figured out was that while it's pushing or checking for e-mail, any call I get is going to VM. I just tried it several times and bingo, straight to VM - when I turn on 3G, I can call it.

Is that normal??? If so, here's the dilema - do we leave 3G off, so we get better signal to get calls, but then do we need to turn of push so the calls can come through? I am starting to think a basic phone is the answer...:)

My understanding from the original iPhone is that EDGE can't do both voice and data at the same time. Anytime I am using data, voice calls go straight to VM. That's just the way it ahs always been on the iPhone. I assume that it is an EDGE limitation.

Which I guess is fine and I can be cool with it - it's just that now I think it becomes more of an issue to be aware of if you have Push on with Edge, all the more reason we should be able to have 3G - and be able to leave it on.

I don't have any problem with leaving Push on at all times with my original iPhone. Unless the phone is actively being sent data, I get all my calls. I get email perhaps a couple times per hour, so its never more than a few seconds at a time that the phone would be receiving data over EDGE (where it wouldn't receive a call).

Perhaps if you're getting email every couple of minutes, I can see how this would be a problem. But for random email, it hasn't presented any problem for me.
