I just bought a new iPad from Amazons Black Friday deal so I wanted to get something out of my old one. Question. I am getting an Apple store gift card for my old iPad. Can I use that gift card towards a new iPhone XR purchase effectively making a down payment and purchase through citizen bank? Can a store gift card be used for iTunes purchases?

Thanks for any help.

The Apple Store gift card lowers the price of the new iPhone, so your monthly payments to Citizens should be less. However, if your gift card reduces the price by too much, you might not qualify for the loan. You cannot use the Apple Store gift card for iTunes.

For anyone that reads this with the same question, the answer above appears to be wrong. I spoke with Apple and they said no. They said Citizen Bank requires that only the purchasing credit card be linked to draw monthly payments so you can’t use a gift card and then have a credit card used for the monthly payments. This is the current Apple customer service so I’m not going to say this is 100% correct, but she did confirm it with someone else.

OP, you misunderstood. I never said you can use the Apple Store Gift Card to cover monthly payments! It can be used to reduce the price of the phone. That may make the monthly payments less or more probably reduce the time needed to pay off the phone. Payments need to be charged to a credit card.

No misunderstanding. I specifically asked Apple if I could use a gift card as a “down payment” for an iPhone and then do the normal citizen loan payments for the remaining balance and she said no. She repeated what I asked back to me and called someone else to confirm. I’m not saying she is 100% correct, but that is what I was told.
