You really have to have red-white-and-blue blinkers on (likely manufactured in China) to be so afraid of socialism.

You have to understand, the current definition of 'socialism' in the United States, certainly the one that this fine fellow uses, is 'every kind of thing that is bad in any kind of system of government'. And so they lump together Obama (middle-right technocratic, by any historical standard) with Hitler (extreme right, but hey he called it 'national socialism' so it must be socialist right?), Stalin (mostly extreme left-wing, except for some right-wing elements he brought in), everything the American right-wing hates about Europe, China (which is no longer recognizably left-wing at all), and so forth.

You won't convince him of anything, because that really is the current definition here, so he has plenty of material to 'prove' it. It's sort of entertaining to watch, if you can get past the nausea.

I wonder how such a glass building is designed to withstand earthquakes. I hate to think what might happen if the 'Big One' hit with a store full of people inside.

Also, I question the wisdom of the glass building environment. I find it's incredibly difficult to view the monitors with all the glare. Even when I stop by an Apple store to check my mail on my iPhone I find I'm constantly adjusting the angle so I can see the screen without looking through glare.

Moderators, a bit heavy handed don't you think, removing all traces of any post mentioning the word 'socialism'?? (BTW, you missed one.)

My comment wasn't even a political statement. It was a reaction to the absurdity of being labelled a socialist on these forums, and incidentally, that comment is still there (on another thread).

I came here to post this exact comment. What's going to happen when birds begin flying around in there?

Worry more about the bums lying around in there and their professional advocates suing Apple when they try to kick them out.

Design-wise, how about a tall cylindrical building that looks like a Pro? The center column would house a giant fan that would cool it and also blow people up to the upper stories and eliminate old fashioned elevators.

Whatever, anything will be better than the current location off of Market st.
Seriously.

Not interesting

It is not eye catching and the side street still suffers. Why not add something interesting like a column with an elevator inside and move the side street wall inward sharing the stair way with the street? The two tiny green spots make it evident that more is needed. Why not add a winter garden on top so that plants could hang down? Why not add walls on both sides of the ground floor sales area? They can make it more cozy and also serve as aquaria. What they propose now is exactly "move the _existing_ store 4 blocks" and make it transparent. Boring.

as far as all the negative comments about the big doors and climate control/pigeons... I don't live there, but, from what I understand, San Fran has relatively mild temperatures much of the year, so it wouldn't be a big climate problem, but, rather a way of opening it up for easier access when the weather is right, makes sense when there will be much foot traffic. (also agree about ultrasonic device to keep birds out). (and did you all read the sentence after this: "The store will also include regular glass doors that would act as a primary point of entry when the larger doors are closed."...I bet most of you complainers didn't.)

I happen to like the design, but I do like modern, contemporary and minimalist approaches. :)

What I really am wondering about, though, is this fountain they apparently removed in first design, but, is supposedly back in second design...where is it? Behind the store?

But what about that fugly ugly bugly fountain that the yokels were so up in arms about? I could have done a better job with my left foot...

Fountain is on Stockton Street. If you look at the 3/4 rendering [2nd pic in the article] the fountain would be behind the store close to the sidewalk.

Here's some pics of that fountain in all of its fugliness. http://imgur.com/a/tpIZr

Here's an overhead shot from Google Maps. https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Unio...ff&fb=1&gl=us&cid=242865190081183025&t=h&z=20
ah, ok, now I get it.

If they (the city) care so much about keeping that thing, they should move it (or let apple move it) next door to union square. :roll eyes:

Hopefully the fountain is under 6 feet of concrete. Whoo that thing is ugly. I used to walk past that monstrosity every day when I was in the Bay Area.

But then the trolls won't have any place to
Gulp water out of after they open those sliding doors.
