Apple released the AirTag in April 2021, so it is now three and a half years old. While the AirTag has not received any hardware updates since then, a new version of the item tracking accessory is in development, according to a recent report.

Below, we recap rumors about a second-generation AirTag.

Timing

A new AirTag is one of many new products that Apple aims to announce in the first half of 2025, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

From his Power On newsletter on Sunday:
I expect Apple to kick off 2025 with several other new devices in the first half of the year:

- 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models with M4 (J613 and J615).
- Revamped iPhone SE (V59).
- Refreshed 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Air models (J607 and J637).
- New Magic Keyboards for the updated iPad Air line (R307 and R308).
- An upgraded AirTag item finder accessory (B589).

He did not provide any specific details about the new AirTag in the newsletter.

In October 2023, Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said mass production of the second-generation AirTag had been postponed from the fourth quarter of 2024 until some point in 2025, but he did not provide a reason for the apparent change in plans. Kuo and Gurman are thus in agreement that a new AirTag is coming next year.

Features

Gurman previously said the new AirTag would feature an upgraded chip with improved location tracking. If so, the AirTag could be updated with the second-generation Ultra Wideband chip that debuted in all iPhone 15 models last year.

Kuo believes the new AirTag will have some kind of integration with Apple's Vision Pro headset, but he has not shared any specific details.

No design changes have been rumored for the AirTag so far. Read our AirTag 2 guide for more.

The number one thing it needs is a design change. All it needs is a little attachment point on it, like the AirPods Pro 2 have, so you can actually attach it to things without needing to buy expensive adapters. But what would an Apple product be without expensive adapters? Not to mention those expensive adapters sometimes pop open and it falls out.

The big deal for me is the "I'm here" alert tone. Many older people and I have lost hearing in the upper tones. When looking for our devices, we must ask our younger friends, "Do you hear something beeping?". My hearing is normal in the lower tones (500Hz - 750Hz) but most alert beeps are higher than that.

Other devices address this by sounding an ascending tone from low to high. I can hear that only while the lowest tone is playing.

The best situation would allow the user to set the tone/melody to what works best for them.

Better yet, because your smart device is "in contact" with the tag, have the alarm be generated from the iPhone/iPad. That way you can set its tone/style/volume to your liking. It would increase the volume as you get closer. You could even use earphones so everyone else doesn't need to know you are looking for something.

If you’re willing to go with something without an Apple logo on it, there’s this. And it’s cheaper than Apple’s.

For love of all things holy, please don't start using click bait headlines like every third rate website. "Airtags 2 Expected in First Half of 2025". Done.
The content of the story doesn’t even support that headline, though.

More like “Airtags 2 Expected at some point. Maybe. Though there’s no data to support that.”

G5 Airtags Tuesday I just know it. Anyone remember those days?

The hole definitely won't happen, it would eliminate their sale of many accessories. Not good for business.

The hole would only be beneficial for those that want a Find My device with a hole, like the Chipolo (actually, I suppose Chipolo is bad for business, don’t tell Apple), but only one with an Apple logo. Oh, AND UWB. But, to be close enough for UWB to work, a user’s probably already hearing the chirp, so that’s a questionable benefit.
