New Retina MacBook Appears in Early Unboxing Video

Luckily Apple still makes laptops for you. They're called the 13" and 15" rMBP. :)

I am well aware of those other machines. I'd have been more interested to hear your opinion on the MacBook (you know, the machine this thread is about), but I suppose a patronising comment which adds nothing to the discussion is just as easy.

Thanks for your contribution.

funny to see that some people know how fast or slow this new Macbook will be without even testing or actual reviews available.

I am gonna buy this new Macbook, will put on my workload on, like with my current MacBook Pro Retina late 2013.
Gonna do this for about 12-13 days...When not satisfied, bring it back to my local Apple Store and get the full refund, like I did in the past with my Mac´s

I am a moderate user and work almost wireless and dont need more ports then a power port

I think THE best review is your own review with your own workload

Just curious what exactly you guys don't like about the keyboard? The edge to edge design?

I guess the keys don't have enough travel for some folks.
That needs to be experienced first hand and I'll hold on saying anything until I get my hands on one myself.

I don't think I can agree on that...not having MagSafe is consistent with the anticipated user base: users who want a Mac product (keyboard, trackpad, Mac OS) in a highly portable (iOS style) device. Apple's POV is that they've sold zillions of iPads and they don't have MagSafe....

Having MagSafe in the first place is a good idea. Taking that functionality away provides literally no benefits. There's less need for MagSafe on iOS devices and I'm sure you can appreciate the difference.

They have taken away a very useful feature on the portable Macs (function), in order to get it thinner (form). This is a prime example of form over function. I can't see why some are so happy or nonchalant to see MagSafe go.

It seems to have no OS on it. Did not look like it was booting.

So it wasn't stolen out of the distribution channel

[Also like the way he says "MacBook"]

Yeah... the X tells me it had no OS loaded??? Something's not right???

All Ma-Bouk's come loaded with OSX. :D

In retrospect I don't know why, but I was pretty sure the charger had an additional daisy-chained USB-C port. Apparently it doesn't. That's disappointing. I thought that was such a clever idea.

No, the keys look like they're set in/flush with the aluminium.

Many reviewer's have said it feels odd at first but you quickly get use to it. Guess you have to try it to really know if it's not to your liking.

Overall... I like the new MacBook... just will wait until version 2 comes out.

It is legit though, that's what it looks like.

I personally agree with you all on the form of the MacBook. Thinness aside, I really think it looks horrible. Though in saying that, I also thought the 12" PowerBook looked horrible, while most people disagreed with me.

Nonetheless I think we can all agree on one thing - ditching MagSafe for one 'does all' port, just to get it as thin as possible, is a dreadful idea - and a classic example of Apple's form over function.

There are some really great things about this computer. But to me it feels more like an engineering exercise, in that 'hey, we can do this', rather than the 'this is the future of notebooks' feeling that I got when the MacBook Air was first revealed.

I'm sure time will prove me wrong. Though I hope they'll keep MagSafe.

blasphemy

i remember when the 17" was the answer in similarly style posts.

however isnt it about time they redesign the power adapters? white glossy plastic dosent seem to match anything they are doing these days

Really like the look of that, but not a fan of the single port. Couldn't they have added, oh I don't know... a few USB-C ports on there?

If you have a sizable iTunes library, or heaven forbid you have a decent camera, the drivespace gets exhausted pretty quickly on these little notebooks. ...iCloud isn't going to back up tens of gigs of your RAW or DNG files, just little jpgs, and odds are you're not going to score a connection to the net everywhere you go anyway to stream everything, since this is a Mobile Computer, and not a desktop, making it pretty crippled.

So yes, now we're driving not only the computer, but a second spinning HD unit over usb, burning up the battery that much faster. Many HD's won't even run when on battery power or attached to a hub, or even without their own power supply. HD's are that energy thirsty.

All this no ports wireless stuff looks slick in commercials, but the amount of drivespace & wifi bandwidth available in the machines hasn't increased proportionately to make it feasible yet.

I guess you'll have to stop hording pornography and watch it via flash like the rest of the world.

First time i notice them in this video, on the non USB type C side is something that looks very much like a headphone port ... and then 2 smaller holes that remind me of the sim card tray thingies on the phones ... that side is rarely on official photos, the only i could find was a darker than usual space grey model, where it is very hard to see them ... what are they? Headphone jack dropped last minute? airholes?

Ya bro, those are microphones... current MBA's have the same thing. Heck... even the iPhone does on the bottom.

The performance should be good. The Passmark on the CPU is around 3000, comparable to that of the 2.4GHz i3-3110M. The fast flash storage and RAM should make it feel snappy. On paper, it shouldn't be a slouch, and should run like butter.

The CPU throttling as a result of the fanless design may be a concern, and how heavily it throttles under load to prevent hitting the TJ. Max (if at all) would be very interesting to see.

Probably how it appears as though the keys have almost no travel what so ever.

It will take some adjustment, but I think most people will be able to adapt. My favorite keyboard is Apple's bluetooth keyboard because it has some travel, but I've adapted to the rMBP's keyboard which has less travel than the previous Unibody MBPs.

Still not seeing how a single port is sensible.

Since these things have such limited drivespace and aren't upgradable, that pretty much guarantees the need for an external drive. ...and having to choose between having your drive plugged in or your charger sucks.

I liked getting to hear Vietnamese spoken. And I liked the keyboard. :p

256 is limited storage? Fine for me. You rarely need to plug in an external for anything.

Who just has a usb drive in all the time?

Then I guess the rMBP is better for these people.

Leaving whom, exactly, to buy this?

By the time kids are in high school, they've shot more photos and video and have more music and movies than these puny drives can hold. In your mind, this warrants everyone buying MBPs? A notebook with no method for expansion whatsoever is a toy. An iPad has an excuse for being so limited. It intends to connect to a fully functional computer somewhere, which stores the master copies of media. This is supposed to be that fully functional computer, but it is not.

It is an iPad with a keyboard running OSX.

I don't think this is a classic example of Apple anything. This is the first time Apple has created a laptop with only standard standard connectors. I can see in a couple of years using USB-C for all my portable devices, whether they come from Apple or not. I don't care to argue about whether that is "form" or "function". In any case I'm glad to see Apple headed in this direction.

USB-C (w/ USB 3.1) is the best connector yet. That this isn't an Apple exclusive makes it even nicer. Only downside is that it has less bandwidth than ThunderBolt, but hopefully a future revision will change that (and I'd imagine future MacBook Pro updates will have both USB-C and ThunderBolt for a while, if there aren't massive technical challenges in doing so).

I do like MagSafe, but it seems possible for someone to create a power-only MagSafe-like USB-C cable. If not, losing MagSafe is a tough trade-off, but I think what we gain more than makes up for it.

I couldn't disagree with you more. :D

I actually love the notebook and everything about it.
Maybe because I am trying hard to use an iPad and keyboard as an ultra portable notebook and it's not the greatest. I may use a MacBook as my everyday and ditch the iPad altogether or just use it for reading.

Thunderbolt isn't exclusive and it's been 4 years with very little peripherals. I have yet to plug anything in my thunderbolt port. It's going to be at least 5 years before usb-c becomes standard. its not really universal when it's not backward compatible like 3.0, 2.0, and 1.0. Regular USB ports will still be around for awhile.
