Man that's cheap in the UK. The maxed out model here is NZ$2600, which is STG1300. Even with the guarantee, that's a big difference. NZ$240 for the upgrade from 1.2 to 1.3 alone (about US$180)

I have it as well for 512 gold...but it really is not that short of a time because they are quoting an April 20th arrival

its about right. 3 business days takes you to the 15th to ship, and then delivery could take couple of days, taking you to monday 20th.
Are you saying you have that for 512 gold from the US store? If so, you are one of the few who managed it.
512 gold went to 3-4 weeks very quickly in the US store

In my experience ordering with Apple, in the past they have typically over quoted their delivery estimates. That is, I have usually gotten the order delivered several days earlier than their estimate. Hoping this is true in this case, also.

I grabbed a 512G gold 1.2. My delivery is also 1-3 days, but I'm considering the 1.3 and canceling this order. Do you guys think the 1.3 would have a lower battery life vs the 1.2 on normal tasks? I would think maybe, but have no idea obviously.

No idea about the battery life. What I do know is if you change now, you'll be waiting 3-4 weeks instead of 1-3 days!

Yes, I know that, but that doesn't bother me too much as long as I get the one I'm happy with. I think it won't matter much to justify the $150. I have a 2013 and 2014 rMBP15 I7/16GB/512G laptops. One is from work, one is personal. That satisfies my "Pro" needs.

Backed off.

Got to the cart with the 512GB model and applecare. Saw it was just about $2k. Decided that was $500 too much for too many compromises.

Bought an Apple Watch instead.

And the Apple Watch isn't a compromise? You could have also not done AppleCare and dropped 200 bucks off the price for the rMB.

I'm not going to be a negative Nancy here, there's enough of that. But I am a little bit surprised that upgrading the processor gets you shipping, at the earliest, three weeks out. I could be wrong, but it sounds like they have not manufactured many of them; certainly not enough to be comfortable improving shipping times. I expected upgrades to take somewhere around a week or so, but not 3 to 4 weeks right off the bat.

However, I ordered a Grey 1.2Ghz model in the UK and it was 3-4 weeks on every model, configuration and colour I chose. I was not a slouch on getting online either.

My feeling is they made relatively few MB's for quick dispatch and are primarily focusing on the Apple Watch logistically and will split distribution on a supply and demand basis.

Seriously…?

No product care on a 1st Gen prototype product, with no known track record?

Hmmm, I suppose I could have also crossed the road to my car without looking this morning. Then I could have driven to work without my seatbelt on and jumped every red light and still made it to work in one piece.

But I did not think it was worth the risk..

I stopped buying AppleCare long ago and switched to SquareTrade. Their coverage is better, and doesn't just cover 3 incidents, but the entire value of the plan even if it's multiple claims. Plus, you can transfer a SquareTrade warranty with a simple email transfer. You can also buy an extra year with SquareTrade that AppleCare does not offer.

I didn't get AppleCare either. If there's any problems I'll rely on Apple's track record.

Okay Apple...

Why is the 2.3 chip a $250 upgrade on the base model and only (Still high) $150 on the higher end version?

Are you giving us different chips? Are they crafted differently? Are they hand assembled?

Please don't tell me your blatantly price gouging those that don't need a 512gb hard drive.

I had an idea, to check Apple's next big market, being China. And sure enough, the silver and space grey are at 1-3 days there too. Although BOTH models of gold are at 3-4 weeks.
So (1) there's great big piles of these things in the US and China at least, and (2) either the gold models are really popular, or they didn't make that many of them

um, because the upgrade on the base model is from 1.1 to 1.3ghz,
while the upgrade on the higher end version is from 1.2 to 1.3ghz,
and hence costs less

Yes, I backed off too. I have spent weeks thinking, "shall I / shan't I". I thought I had come down on the side of shall, but then the 3-4 weeks shipping estimate on the purchase page was the final straw. Although I can afford it, it is a rip off machine, and when they say it is to be released on 10th April, why should I then wait a month? I feel Apple is just taking the **** more and more. I'm going to give it a year and see where they are at. My 2013 11" MBA could go on for many years yet!

I am definitely not getting the Apple Watch. I think the battery in version 1 is not nearly good enough (18 hours' average use is bound to compute to 12 hours on the days I really use the thing, not least as the battery will degrade with time). It is also clunky as hell. Technology cannot yet physically deliver what they really have in mind for this, I think. When it is half as thick and the battery lasts an average of 72 hours, I might consider it.

now China Space Grey 512g has slipped to 3-4 weeks (it had been 1-3 days)

So much web traffic

The load and excitement too much for the servers:

I'd like to think I'm going to skip out on this first generation model, because it seems like a smart thing to do based upon the reviews. But, I have a sneaking suspicion that I'll walk into the Apple Store and buy one in a few weeks.

From my opinion you actually don't need to upgrade the CPU. I rather would choose the 1.2GHz/500 GB model over the 1.1 GHz/256GB model, which only calls an 100€ premium. Early reviews state that CPU power of the entry model is sufficient, with 1.2GHz you should be on the safe side. Of course we're not talking about video editing. But that won't be your goal when thinking to buy the Macbook.

If not, than get yourself an Air. Saying that, I'm still strugeling if I should replace mine with the new Macbook. I really like the design.

Yeah... No.

The cost difference between chips (1.1 v 1.2) is way too close to quantify this rationalization.

I'm amused that at current count, this thread is on 46 posts but the one for the watch is at 492- almost ten times the demand.

My customised Air is brilliant. More powerful, much longer battery life, better connectivity. I think I'd save my money and stick with that rather than go for this. Maybe in a few versions time I may consider, perhaps.

You can defer and purchase any time before the one year warranty expires. That would give you time to see how it does.

Is that including VAT? The equivalent model in Denmark is ~1500£, so quite a difference!

It really is way too expensive here.

Must be without VAT. Through my University's education store it is is £1,220.40 which equals £1,017+20%.
Standard (non-edu) price in the UK is £1,419, so not so different to your Danish price...
