I wave the old flat (not the new tower style) 2TB Time Capsule. It's still working OK, but is getting old (~5 years). Also, the coverage could be better. iPad barely gets a signal on the deck, which is not that far from the router. It seems like it used to better.

Just got a new 2015 rMBP, so thinking of upgrading the networking as well. Anyone have recommendations on a new router that can also support TimeMachine on an external? I know I could get the new Airport Extreme, but wondering if some of the new Asus or Nitehawk's are now preferred?

Both Asus and Netgear sell newer routers that advertise they support Time Machine and both make routers that are better in almost every way than Apple's routers. But that said, Time Machine with all these third party (non-Apple) routers is spotty. Some people have no issues, but forums here and at Smallnetbuilder are filled with people struggling with Time Machine on these devices. Particularly when new OS X versions come out, things seem to break.

If you want the best compatibility with Time Machine, stick with either the Time Capsule or an external drive attached to the newer 802.11ac Airport Extreme.

Do NOT buy an Apple router; they are being discontinued and since they need a proprietary application to configure their long term viability is in question.
