Here's a thought. Instead of dreaming of a 17" macbook pro that is too big to be a portable laptop, and performace wise, somewhere between a macbook and and an iMac. Why not buy a 15", and use the money that you saved to buy a 42" 1080p TV. Then you can hook up the awesome 15" to 42 inches of grand beauty and think wow! Two screens for the price of one 17".
And since your dreaming of blu-ray, get one of them ps3's and then you got your gaming box two, streaming 1080p at your tired eyes.

try getting a 42" 1080p TV for the price difference between a 15" and a 17"
I have a 17, and its completely portable, I dont see what the fuss is about. Id much prefer the portability and HD 17" screen in one machine. Its not like you can take a 42" with you travelling or to your mates house.

The 17" MBP beats the imacs except for the 24", at least the current imacs. The 17" is plenty portable for a lot of people...to each his own.

Also, I have a 52" LCD 1080p Sharp Aquos, and I hook it regularly up to my mac for fun, both to watch movies and surft with an external keyboard etc. Comparing hooking it up to a TV vs. a bigger screen on the laptop is like apples to oranges. Having more real-estate on the laptop is important for me, and it isn't duplicated by having a big screen TV. When I want to have lots of windows open, multitasking, and photo-editing, nothing can compare to a big laptop screen with the hi-res. Sounds like a 17" isn't for you, but it sure is for me!

also, I call BS on the rumor, with the others

whats the point of selling the current model, to get the next model when there is no actual performance difference at the minute, are you really so bothered about getting the very latest MBP.

I am only selling this one because I want the higher res screen. Apple sent me the one with the lower res although I offered to pay for the 100.00 upgrade to get the high res. Now I'm stuck trying to get rid of this one just to get a 100.00 upgraded screen.

Boo.

That seems like a lotta trouble for 220x150 additional screen space.

Happy with my relatively trouble-free 15" 14x9 here.

Wasn't the tint issue somewhat isolated or have you heard that it was more widespread? I'd read that the reason the 15" models are (or were) so out of stock was because of demand, not LED screen quality, despite a few isolated problems on that front...
The tint issue hasn't been reported much on tech sites like Macintouch, which are normally great for flagging user issues/experiences and I would have expected to seen far more coverage if this was a widespread problem. The evidence for it being a widespread problem is anecdotal and has come from forums, which isn't normally the most efficient way of judging the scale of a problem...

it has nothing to do with screen space... Its resolution. And as I am a digital photographer... the more pixels per inch I have, the better. Its not really that much hassle anyway. just selling and then buying a new one. Already got a bid on my auction! (See my sig)

Maybe a MBP 17" LED in the next few days

I was ordering a Macbook Pro 17" Hi-Res Glossy from Amazon on Wed. It had next day shipping. (1 left) By the time I placed my order it changed to 3-4 days shipping time.

In the Apple store, US and UK, you can select a normal display and have next day delivery. If you select the Hi-Res you get a 3-4 day shipping.

Apple has handled upgrades like this in the past.

I sure hope I am getting a LED model!!

Actually the ACDs are very reasonably priced for their specifications. IPS monitors of that size are around that price region as well. LED backlit IPS monitors are currently very expensive, so I am really wondering how Apple intends to integrate that technology into their line and how it will affect the pricing of their line.

What I cannot stand is Apple's **** warranty and aftersales support though. Dell has recently launched their own line of wide gamut IPS monitors and while many of them come with the typical poor Dell QC, Dell has apparently been very good to customers and readily replaces monitors with little questions asked. Try getting the same treatment if you get a dead pixel or a pinkish hue with your more expensive ACD.

Sadly my present monitor while lovely is starting to die due to a backlight that is slowly getting dimmer and dimmer, so I hope to replace it with a more durable model when it gets cheap enough. As it is, it is very hard to justify shelling out $4K for a LED backlit monitor, I much rather keep buying monitors to replace them.
Dell 2007 WFP can often be had for almost half the price (40% atleast) compared to ACD 20" over here in Sweden and they feature the same panel. Design of ACD is better and the coating might be less disturbing, but the Dell got more connection options and an USB hub aswell. Nec 20WGX2Pro are quite much cheaper than the ACD and better.

While the 2007WFP is hit or miss.
We are many who ordered the 2007 wfp from the same forum (sweclockers) and we all got the s-ips, also one guy said that Dell had confirmed that they had switch over to 100% s-ips for them.

1680x1050 would be nice, don't ask me why it's not already there.

because 1400x900 is almost too small to read some stuff

1400x900 on a 15" display is pretty hi-res compared to most notebooks that only get what 1280x800 15" wide resolution

Sign Me Up With A 2.8GHz Merom Inside The Matt 1920 x 1200 17" Screen

Can we expect a 2.8GHz Merom to be cool enough to survive inside a 17" LED 1920 x 1200 display? I would hold out if you experts think it won't be too hot. :) Please say YES! ;)

Must Be MATT !!

I am getting my 17" August 20th... LED or not. I am pulling for LED though. That would be a SWEET silent update!!

ordered mine today, thru nextbyte, its a BTO.. picking it up last week of august.. if i couldn't pick it up because they delayed a few days to give me LED im sure i'd understand :D

Greener Apple? Jobs saying that all Apple computers will feature LED backlit technology?

What happened to the iMac's then?

If they're having trouble getting a good run of 17" LED backlit displays, what makes you think they're not having even more trouble getting a good run of 20/24" LED backlit displays.

All Apple computers/displays will feature LED backlights (at some point in the future). The technology is there, the production isn't. Also, re: a greener Apple, the Glass screen front and aluminum chassis are easily recyclable, while (I would imagine) the reforming process of the old plastic bodies will probably produce a lot of toxic fumes, as most plastics do when they're exposed to intense heat.

IF they silently update the 17" screens with LED backlights... will I have a choice in the store of picking an LED or the CFCL backlight? I mean... will it say it on the box?

Well, the upcoming LEDs would never stop me from purchasing an MBP. I just purchased a 17 with HD display and 160Gb 7200rpm to replace my 17" MBP2.16 Core Duo. The display already looks great, so that was just about the only thing it didn't matter to me when upgrading.

As an earlier post said, buy now.
