How's this different to the SD to Lightning adaptor which only recently arrived with the 12.9inch iPad Pro - looks identical and it's not a new item on the store???

Isn't the new one usb3 enabled for the pro where as the old one was usb2

The Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader basically got updated back in December 2015 to be able to do USB 3 speeds.
http://9to5mac.com/2015/12/12/review-apple-usb-3-lightning-to-sd-card-camera-reader/

The newer SD card reader is larger:
"larger than its predecessor when they’re placed next to each other. Measuring 5.2″ long by 1.2″ wide and 0.3″ thick (versus 4.6″ long by 1.2″ wide by 0.27″ thick), the new Reader has a longer and slightly thicker SD Card chassis, as well as a thicker cable leading to its Lightning connector, both parts no doubt in service of hidden USB 3 components inside."

"The new version is labeled as “MJYT2AM/A Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader (USB 3),” model A1595."
as per above
