They are wired so that the monitor cannot be on when the laptop is closed.

My 12" Powerbook seems to be just the oposite. If I close the lid while an external monitor is plugged in, the Powerbook automatically switches the external display to primary, and I'm good to go. Seems to be wired FOR such operation.

I'm not saying heat's not an issue, I'm on the fence there. But I will say that it appears that Apple intended for the units to be used that way.

Here are the speakers I use. I paid about $500 for each speaker and I love them to death.

no no no ... the powerbooks are designed to run with the lid closed. However it only works if another monitor is attached. Try it if you don't belive me.

Well... I stand corrected. Thank you. 😎

What's the matter? Couldn't afford a 30"?

I know that you know that you cannot use one on a PB, for it requires the special graphics card for the G5...But I know you were kidding.

No, that's a Sony Ericsson T610/T616. 😛

is there a preference for this? I have a monitor plugged into my tibook as a dual monitor, and when i close the case, my ti goes to sleep, ext drives spin down, and the monitor no longer gets a signal.

those 6021s look great and sound LOUD!! 🙂

wish i had one of those monitors as well (drools..!)

definitely do not pay 'mrp' for them - if you look around you can get them for a good price (ie in australia harvey norman have them for AU$499, but i only paid $289, and then found them for $250 two weeks later!!). at that price they are cheaper than soundsticks II, and better decibel for money 😉

here's a pic with the icurve...!

The way i do it is to close my lid and then plug my external monitor in. this wakes up the computer and then it only detects my external monitor.--however for heat reasons i dont run it like this for too long

not a bad idea, but has hot as the front left corner gets that can't be good for the LCD.

you need an external keyboard, too (at least on the 12"PB).

Here is how I use my PB15 and my external 19" LCD.

1. I have the LCD plugged into the PB, but you can plug it in after OSX is up.
2. With the PB lid open, start OSX (i.e., turn it on 🙂 )
3. Now that OSX is up, and you have a picture on both screens, close the lid to your PB. This will put your PB to sleep. mmmmm, pretty glowing light.
4. Now, if you have bluetooth, wake your system up (with the lid closed) with your bluetooth device. I have a keyboard, and mouse, so I just move the mouse around, or press a button on the keyboard. This will wake up your PB, and display the primary on your external LCD.
6. Now that you are up and running, open the PB lid, and it will stay off. At least id does on mine.

Make sure you go into the bluetooth settings area, and click the button to allow bluetooth devices to wake the computer system.

I have been doing this since March, and have never had a problem.

That is one sweet setup, BigEvan23....even if your PowerBook does explode after 15 minutes of use. 😛 😀

Interesting to hear so many people talk about the heat considerations....I'd always understood that the Powerbook is also designed for use in a desktop setup by simply plugging in a monitor, mouse, and keyboard. But it's true that the 'Book does get mighty toasty when I've got iTunes going or when I'm watching DVDs.
