see, i think i've seen the dock and back then i thought it was wireless charging/syncing dock and the plug was there merely to fix it... overestimated apple once
Are the new Shuffles in the Apple retail stores yet? I really would like to know if the new USB cable does work in the 2G shuffle. I agree with you - in theory it should have no problem, but was wondering if anybody has tried it.
And don't forget, with the new shuffle is 'only' the short sync cable and when you buy it alone at http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC003?mco=NDI3MzM3NQ you will get a short one AND a long one.
The short one is probably for macbooks and the longer one is for iMacs and charger, well you can use the short one too but that's probably what Apple thought 😉
btw The new iPod shuffle rocks!
P.S.) would the connector of the 2G work with the 3G?
On the tech end, what are the benefits/costs of syncing through a 3.5mm jack? Or is this not a 3.5mm jack? I thought it was an analog jack, and that syncing required digital.

it merely saves space, and apple doesn't want any other extra socket apart from its own 30-pin connector. all digital signals are modulated on top of analogue channel. it's not rocket science to sync through the jack, just needs an extra logic to determine what is connected, headphones or the usb cable. but given that usb also provides charging, it's pretty trivial. in technology field, most of the time it's more about ideas than science itself.
