As an aside, or as an option, the ability to pair your iPhone or iPad YouTube app to you AppleTV YouTube app as a view controller is really nice. You can search for and then queue up programs from your iPhone/iPad to play on the TV while the TV app is playing content. Use the “Link with TV code” option NOT the “AirPlay & Bluetooth devices” option. It’s a little wonky to get used to, but it works really well. I think this will also allow you to do the 15 second skips from the iPhone or iPad as well.

Not a big fan of the remote out of the gate. Just feels odd in the hand and buttons almost seem too clicky. Likely things I"ll get used to in time. The biggest problem and thing that might prevent me from using this new remote though is with the YouTube app.

YoutubeTV app allows you to fast forward 15 secs without HUD display/UI coming up with the old Siri remote, but the new remote brings it up the HUD display/UI which is super annoying. Basically adds two clicks to every time I want to fast forward 15 seconds instead of 1 click. Terrible for jumping through a recorded football game. This remote interaction is very similar to when you add/program in a non-Siri remote.
I’ve verified app versions are the same. It huge deal-breaker for me which is sad. And I doubt Youtube gives two 💩
For this reason among others we may be doomed to keep all the remotes around.

Thanks I'll try this.

Yep, super sad and I have very little hope for change in the future. I have two AppleTVs and now use the old remote for all football watching on our primary TV. Considering buying another old (2016) remote.

We watch quite a bit of football these days, and even made me consider a non apple streaming device to use for football. Problem is that it is difficult to learn how their remotes work without buying and trying. One intriguing feature of the Nvidia Shield is that it will upscale HD to 4k via "AI Upscaling" and reportedly does a pretty good job. Pro version required to upscale 60Hz content. Just don't know if they have a physical button for 15 sec skip that works with YouTube TV.

Hard for me to grok how shoddy the YouTube app is. Don't they make just as much money from iOS users paying for YouTube TV as android? Similarly, their Google Voice app on iOS is also hobbled by a bare minimum of features. The Apple TV app is the most peculiar failure, as seems to me the most important place for a "TV" app UI to work. *sigh*

I know from personal experience that the new Google TV devices have the same terrible fast-forward interaction within YouTubeTV app that you get with the new AppleTV remote. That is why I have little hope that they’ll change it. Seems that they think having the UI pop up and adding an extra click is reasonable??????

Aside from the inability to do PiP I think there iOS apps are pretty good. Simple double tap on the right side of the screen to forward just like the YouTube app.

After using this new remote I have to agree it’s still not that good , why they moved the mute is beyond me ? Keep banging he wrong button and the Siri button is daft too . No airtag option either . Looks rushed to me

Oh, I agree the YT app (and web) gestures are the best. I am really referring to the Apple TV YouTube TV app (which is subject of this thread). I was looking for a video player that has similar gesture controls to YT iPadOS app and came up empty.

Because of the lack of in-app PiP i ususally use Safari and a PiP shortcut when watching YouTube.com.

YouTube on iOS can do PiP not but you have to enable it here. https://www.youtube.com/new. Says until Jan 31st but they've already pushed it back from October 31st.... not sure when it will be a normal public feature but it works great currently. Btw, not sure if you need premium for this feature? That is what I have.

From the website:
For a limited time, Premium members can try out new features that we’re working on
Thanks for link. I resent that YT has blocked the web-PiP mode in iOS for so long. And they keep working to break it. This is Google's approach to the web: "we decide how the web works; standards be damned." No thanks. I'll stick to my PiP-Shortcut and youtube-dl.

Recently got this remote and while I do like it, it’s garbage with the youtube app. I doubt apple will enforce support but yeah googles interface is trash

Get yourself a good universal remote and teach it to the Apple TV. Use the ATV remote for Siri if you want.

ETA: The dealbreaker for me WRT the 2021 4K is that it crushes black levels 19 and below and clips whites above 232. This is inconsistent with all my other devices as well as the 4th generation ATV. I can't even begin to imagine what Apple was thinking.

In general, the revamp is excellent. I wish the new remote had backlit keys, making it more useful.

I would be VERY interested in more feedback from users of the new remote with YouTubeTV. That constitutes over 50% of my Apple TV usage. I am excited about the "clickiness" and size of the new remote, but if it has issues with YouTube TV, then I may need to reconsider my desire to buy one.
I use YouTube mainly on my ATV as well and just got the new remote this week. Very frustration to skip forward and the screen pause and have to hit play each time I click forward or backward. Will most likely go back to old remote despite liking the construction and feel of the new remote better.

YouTube was the first app I tried with the new remote and I was immediately disappointed with the way the 10 second skip/rewind behaved. Now instead of one click to skip/rewind 10 seconds, it takes 3 clicks.

Old Siri Remote
1. Click right/left to skip/rewind 10 seconds.

New Siri Remote
1. Click right/left to bring up the progress bar.
2. Click the right/left button again to skip/rewind 10 seconds (this step also pauses the video).
3. Click the play button to resume video.

Why did they have to change it? I guess I will be returning the remote.
Perfect description of the problem.

Darn, so the new Siri Remote still behaves this way with YouTube? I returned mine already but I was hoping an update would fix it and make it behave like the old Siri Remote. Thanks for confirming it’s still the same.

Can’t believe the new style remote has been out for over a year and YouTube still hasn’t fixed their app. It actually was working like the old remote the other day, so I thought it was finally fixed (one click to skip ahead) but the next day it was back to requiring 3 clicks. Darn!

I believe YoutTubeTV is currently pushing out a new LiveGuide which has even impacted the old remote and its 15 seconds fast forward. Now the stupid large text UI pops up.... but at least I don't need to hit the select/middle button like you do on the new remote.
