Lower price?
Speed. Pencil support. Have an Air 2 with an almost dead battery. Having troubles with opening apps. Doesn’t charge the way it should. Can’t used it while charging. In need for a new one. But gonna sit it out untill the new pro’s are revealed.

Just had my 5th Gen iPad a year and now it’s “discontinued” for a model that is practically identical other than a wee bit faster and you can use a pricey stylus with it. Er great. Good old “new” Apple. What a greedy, lazy lot they’ve now become.

Until it runs full office apps with mouse support especially with up to 512 gb of storage and microsd card support or usb-c storage options, it cant compete with the surface pro or windows 10 hybrids. Thats the missing link to making it a laptop replacement. Even the web versions of chrome os are better than what iOS has to offer just because of mouse support and real time file management although the cloud is always accessible as well. How does apple expect us to use all the storage on the ipad pro top storage tiers and they still refuse full applications and mouse support. Not all of us even do 4K video editing, play large mobile iOS games, or draw (the excuses so far for that extra storage; since music collections are easily saved to the cloud)...........so something needs to give. The software dock was a good starting point; something borrowed from chrome OS, some android devices, and even Windows.

The iPad Pro has to converge with MacOS no matter what or at least run full none-mobile applications or its just a tablet as usual. At this point many would take a MacOS detachable tablet laptop device that runs ipad apps and has pencil support. Its a no-brainer to create such a device.

So you’re talking about a laptop. People seem to forget that they want a laptop yet complaining about a tablet.

The smart connector is almost enough of a reason for me to go with an iPad Pro over the regular iPad. The Smart Keyboard is one of the best Apple accessories I've ever bought. It's the best, easily detachable keyboard I've ever used and really makes the whole experience a lot better. It's also really nice not having to worry about charging it; every time I've used bluetooth keyboards with my mobile devices in the past, chances are the battery is dead right when I really want to use it.

I hope Apple and other accessory makes find more uses for that connector.

The smart connector is seamless. Although pricey for Apples Keyboard, the quality of the keyboard fabric like material is unrivaled and communicates excellent with the iPad. Its an excellent accessory to the iPad if one can justify the price point.

I feel like performance should be thrown in here. Anything that doesn't have ProMotion or an A10X runs pretty badly. I messed around with a coworker's 2017 9.7 iPad and it was so sluggish/stuttery. Don't even get me started on the minis performance.

They update their low cost iPad one year later and this is greedy? Trying to understand what you mean.

What a naming nightmare. 5th gen ipad, new ipad, new new ipad, new new new ipad, new 10" ipad, new new 9.7" ipad. WTF. Please name it iPad 1, iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4, iPad 5, iPad 6, ... iPad 9,...
Just call it “iPad” and “iPad Pro.” Like we do for MacBooks. If further clarity is needed, you can specify the release year (“2016 MacBook”). Done.

On the topic of the original post, the iPad is a way better value than the pro - 90% as capable at 50% the price. With the pro, you’re doubling the price for the same basic experience with a few additional “nice to have” features. But not everyone is buying for “value” - some people just want the best available.

Replacing a laptop and being a laptop are separate things.

A laptop replacement should still be able to do everything a laptop does......especially the main things like mouse support. Dex on the Note 8 is a desktop replacement because it does that at least on a far basic level. iOS on the Pro version should at least do it on a basic level. No one is asking it to run PhotoShop, but the heavy hitters would love it to do so although just giving us Full Excel with mouse support will make a world of a difference.

That’s not exactly true. You can replace the way you interact with things instead of giving a 1 to 1. iPad Pro is a laptop replacement for many because it does the same things they do with their laptop, even if not using the same input methods.

And replacing the way you interact with things requires more steps on iOS to do that. That is far less appealing than just making it simple. You tell people to replace their interactions by giving them additional steps to do so. For touch based applications, this is fine but true professional apps need mouse support.

Need to update the Pro to help justify that price difference. New iPad is pretty close for half the price.
In typically Apple fashion, they do it the other way:
slashing the newest model’s RAM to a marginal 2 Gb
This company has become such an insult to its customers - its hilarious

So a comparison without actually having both devices in your hands, and how do you lot know it has 2GB RAM then? Because Apple doesn’t tell anyone so it would need to be tested to find out.

If you want to compare do it with both devices side by side otherwise it’s pointless.

It's easy to ridicule people for wanting better cameras on a tablet, but I think the use cases are different to a phone camera. I've now replaced my flatbed scanner with my iPad Pro, as the camera is far superior to my old iPad Air and makes scanning documents a breeze.

I really like my 10.5" Pro (typing on it now!), but I have to say it would be hard to justify it were I making the decision today. I only really bought it over the 9.7" iPad for the Pencil support. Is a better screen, slightly better performance, two more speakers and second-gen Touch ID worth almost double the price? I'm not so sure.

Apple have backed themselves into a corner a bit, the Pros either need to come down in price by $100-$150 or they need to be dramatically differentiated from the standard model (maybe an iPhone X-esque redesign could contribute towards this, as long as they didn't increase the price at the same time).

Th rumours are suggesting an iPhone X type of design, but I bet here in the U.K. they increase its price if they do that!

True tone doesn't change brightness just annoying yellow tint colour temp and even the 10.5 is just a big iphone nothing special about ipads

Personally True Tone is the worst. First thing i disabled after force trying it a few days

Definitely agree. Turned it off on my phone. Makes everything look too yellow to me. Lacking that feature is definitely not a drawback in my opinion.

Consumers not students will go crazy if its even less than 2 gb ram (this is an educational model). Remember iOS can run on 1 gb ram or even 1.5 gb ram. You are right...how do we know...we are speculating. Increase profit margins bring the ram even lower....Apple's way of making a true profit. To add pencil support, we may be completely wrong about the ram....

Ah yes, I do love a good “No True Scotsman” fallacy in the evening.

Can someone tell me what any of these “new iPads” offer over the iPad Air 2?

  • Support for AKKit
  • Support through iOS 14
  • Support for HEVC/HEIF
  • 500 nit display
  • 32.4 Whr battery vs. 27.62 Whr (Air 2)
  • Apple Pencil

Probably the two big pro features now are the 120hz display and the massive gulf in graphics performance - you are talking like 2.5x faster there. But then if you aren’t doing graphics intensive work like 3d modelling it won’t make a difference to you. The pencil was always going to trickle down to the rest of the line as it’s all more profit for Apple and will become increasingly part of the iPad paradigm... I don’t know if the pro models will be merged into the single bezel-less 11” but it seems like this could be repositioning to a much simpler lineup where the pros are simply more powerful, bigger storage tiers, and have the smart connector?

Ah yes, I do love a good “No True Scotsman” fallacy in the evening.

But I gave you the only logical combat to your intended purpose of your statements even if its using the "No True Scotsman" fallacy to address your statements. But on this forum, I have always respected your assertions.

There is a fairly craptastic Android laptop out there called the iView Gemini. This laptop (slowly) runs all the expected Android Apps, but does so within a very Windows/Mac like desktop interface. I feel that if this product were instead made by Google and/or Apple, it would make a lot more sense in schools (and on my Grandmother's desk) than either Chromebooks (which are limited to being mostly a glorified Chrome browser) and iPads which are hampered by being too much "tablet" for their own good (for this scenario), offering no mouse or trackpad support, and very limited multi-window support.

I really dig my 10.5” 2017 iPad. I’m all about tablets. I just remote onto my Mac Mini from my iPad whenever I need some desktop functions. Not the same as using the Mini full on but hey, works for me.

This Logitech Bluetooth keyboard has a 4 year battery life.

There's a reason why hardly any company makes Smart Connector accessories. The Connector is a solution looking for a problem nobody had.

I started to feel weird about my purchase of a 2017 iPad Pro 12.9 with this weeks new iPad, but the more I look into it, its still a great buy. Besides, I will be using it for a long time before I ever think about upgrading again. Another thing I must admit, iOS really limits this device; although iOS 11 and the Smart Keyboard goes a long way to make it less of an obstacle to use. There are some areas that definitely need improvement such as split view. For instance, I had Firefox (the browser I prefer because it does a great job at keeping my bookmarks synced across different devices and platforms), but there were some issues with text layout and screen space. On my 12 in Surface Pro and MacBook Pro, I can keep a Word doc and Firefox side by side without feeling cramped.

So, its official, Apple really needs to bring the power of the macOS windowing to iOS even as a power user mode. I bought the pencil too, so hopefully it will help when I decide to try it out on some projects.
