arn IMO they are horribly done, very hard to distinguish between them, weak colors and not enough boldness on the mouth/eyes to distinguish them w/out me having to look closely  They are too small for them to look good in their new colors.

Agreed. They are very difficult to distinguish between them. I like the old ones much better.

New smilies are weird, but they're okay.

imo you're batting .500, which is only stellar in baseball. The new ones are past weird all right, but they're defintely not okay by me and I have just become a fan of not using emoticons until the MacRumors site brings back what I now fondly think of as the brat pack.

Agree with many of the comments. I never use the smilies myself, opting for :) or (; instead, but there just isn't enough contrast to be seen as quickly and easily as the old ones (which were nothing to give an award to).

I realize that changing the smilies is a pretty simple thing to do, but it makes me chuckle that they would even bother worrying about something like this when the software the forums run on, and the look that corresponds to it, is about a hundred years old.

You clearly don't know the workaround OP

The new smileys are very hard to make out on a non-retina model. I also thought the old ones looked better, probably because they were more simple.

Screw smilies. Emoji are where it's at! #

(Yes, I'm aware that not every platform can display Emoji)

Huh, is anyone else getting a missing image icon for the "confused" smilie?

Nope; working for me. Try flushing your DNS and/or clearing your browser cache.

add one voice to the people strongly disliking the new smilies.

terrible job.

they only things that allows to sort of making them apart is that they kept the color-code of the old ones.
if you mixed the colors up, nobody would recognized any of them except the cool and the apple one.

score: 2/10

please redesign them.

This site had the best emoticons on the web imo. They were actually amusing to look at. These are just bleh.

Please Arn, bring back the old ones ):

Come on then dannyyankou, what workaround …

The one where you link to an external smiley.

Code:

gets you this:

What, like this?

Are there any plans to change the icons that can be set with a new thread as well?

Browsing through the forums and I just noticed that the old ':(' is still used for threads, along with thumbs up, a bulb and a few more I can't remember!

Tried to let these grow on me over time. I still don't like them. Hopefully these are a failed experiment like the one way voting system on these boards and both will go away soon. Damn shame such time was put into this instead of a MR app. I'd vote this thread down and put an angry smiley, but I'm on an iPhone and can't do either. Odd, because the company this forum covers makes so much money from a platform that this site doesn't fully support. What would the tragic irony smiley look like? Maybe I'd like that one.

I just noticed them. Do not like them. Just saying
& "confused" does not load for me.

Ah, yes. Me, too….

This evening, I am also getting a missing image (replaced by a square box in which resides a nice, fat, question mark) which has changed throughout the evening as it seems to be working its way down the list of smilies. As it happened, this process started with the 'confused' smilie, which, in the circumstances, strikes me as something which is completely appropriate.

In truth, I am merely reporting that this seems to be happening, and seems to have been taking place for a number of hours whenever I checked in on the firms tonight; however, as I rarely use the smilies, it is not something I regard as a matter of overweening importance; rather, I am merely reporting that is happening.
