The iPhone 8 "Space Gray" really is black now, and NOTHING like the Space Gray of the 5/5s/6/6s/7 lines.
There really is no way to debate that.
However, one can make the case that space IS pretty darned dark - FWIW.

This is the clearest shot I could get. Obviously, with the flash on, it's exaggerating the effect. SG 8 vs Jet Black 7+

The 8 looks nothing like that color in person. The flash really distorts things. The best description so far is last years matte black with glass over it.

Yes, that's what I tried to say. I do think it's lighter than the Matte Black, especially in the daylight.

The 8 is pretty much black behind the glass in all but few lighting scenarios. The lights at my work are very cold and bright, this is the only time I can see the "grey" in the back.

The band however is definitely grey. It's actually a pretty close match to Apple Watch space greys, something I've personally wanted since getting my Apple Watch.

at the keynote they said that the iphone X colors have a "pearl essence effect" on them. i don't think the 8 have that (?), at least it was not mentioned. so the colors of the X are most likely a bit different.

This.

Under almost all lighting conditions, it does come off as matte black on the back, with dark gray trim. The day mine arrived, had the sun shining directly on it for a moment, and then the back did take on a gray color. Maybe a little more lighter gray than the following picture (but close).

MKY02

ADD: if you Google "iPhone space gray" and go to the Images tab, you will see that each generation of phone, depending on the lighting and angle, takes on different hues, from dark gray to silver/bare metal. So, not too surprised that it's tough to pin down via pictures what the phone's color is. Guess one needs to get down to a retailer and handle it themselves.

I had a look at them im store today. The space grey 8 is basically black on the back but the sides/borders/edges are more gray than black. Comparing it to my jet black 7 I thought the JB looked more uniform in colour and smarter as the edges and back looked like they were different colours on the 8. But I’m guessing the 8 will be more resistant to the infamous micro scratches or the JB 7.

All three colors for the 8 gives off a pearl effect because of the glass back and flat color underneath, at least to my eyes, there is no metallic/sparkle effect on the back unlike the aluminum on the sides. The 8 and X looks the same when it comes to the back color.
