Frustrating that when they integrated the NFC reader, they removed the built-in mag stripe reader. We almost never see chipless credit cards, but Square’s own integrated gift card system uses swipe-only plastic cards. Our business has lots of those floating around, so typing them in is a hassle. Also surprising that this stand still obscures the camera, given that eGift cards and Cash App payment methods use bar/QR codes!
It doesn’t obscure the camera. You can scan the gift cards with it

Haha. Yeah... I mean, who doesn't appreciate a tip? I have been on the vendor-side of many counters of varying business types. Not all of them were tip-worthy transactions. That said, I don't take issue with any business offering a tip option at POS because I also have no issue with tapping NO TIP for certain transactions. But for those so inclined, having the option is win-win.

The bang-for-buck for this hardware, seems pretty good. While my initial concern about the inevitable: when the 10.2" iPad's physical dimensions changes to not fit with this hardware, it's quickly pretty much moot when you consider A) the relatively low cost of this Square hardware and B) that whatever iPad that does fit this hardware will likely perform Square's transactional functions for years (not like it needs to play the latest game at the highest frame rates). Anyway, if my Mac-powered company were in need of transactional navigation and management, I'd likely consider this setup.
Apple just updated the base iPad so they'll probably stay put on size for a few years.

I just noticed this was just for the base iPad...(not others) Long live Lightening ports!

I love the Square concept. It’s been a revelation for the numerous small business owners I know. But as with any technology, there’s always room for growth/improvement. Looking at a few side businesses for a launch next year, and Square figures in our plans.

And my biggest pet peeve with tipping... the tip amount being calculated AFTER tax when pretty much every tipping guide states that tip should be calculated BEFORE tax. I am not tipping the goverment!

mine is 20+ percent suggested tip and they don't even bring my food to my table.

plus i have to run my own credit card and press all the buttons. like we are seriously just steps to paying to prepare our own food too.

At half the cost of an iPad. The moment apple release the tap to pay api. This is out of date.

Only sorta.

Apple will probably only allow tap-to-pay through apple's payment system, which means Square won't support it.

Also, people still use physical credit cards. You'll still need that hardware for quite a while.

I like the running my own card part because thats what makes Apple Pay possible.

But what you are explaining is "tip creep"....theres a reason why a lot of businesses have been investing in a large screen card reader with a cash tip jar beside it, when a smaller screened card reader is a whole lot cheaper.

Someone didn't read through the article. The Tap to Pay system is only an API, not an Apple payment system. Also, one can still tap physical credit cards on the iPhone tap to pay implementation.

Do some places do that?? I agree that’s kind of lame. But on the other hand, if they really want to be lame for an extra $0.20 toward the serving staff (10% of a $2 tip), then I’m just gonna roll my eyes and let it go.

Square is a terrible company to deal with. I help out at a charity that got blocked by Square. I spent hours with Square support before they even realized the problem was that the account was blocked. Then it became a game of: we blocked you and we won’t tell you why and there is no appeal. My best guess was that it was a case of mistaken identity but I never did make any progress with square.

We used the first version of the Square iPad stand. There was no easy way to access the iPad power button. The stand charger was also way underpowered so a drained iPad battery could take up to an hour to charge enough to be useable.

There’s a headphone jack on the bottom right of it, allowing you to plug in the headphone swipe reader. A bit clumsy, and the white adapter sticking out is a bit of an eyesore, but they did think of that. Even if it was an afterthought. 😅

Disappointed that there is no iPad Air/Pro USB Type C support in this iteration. I realize that might would require a redesign for access to the Touch ID button, but who uses Touch ID at POS? My clients' employees would prefer to have the screen real estate (between the 10.9-inch Air and the 10.2-inch iPad, it admittedly isn't really THAT much… but… every little bit seems to be appreciated). Have to wonder if Square isn't sitting on a Type C version, considering Apple is telegraphing that the future is going to be Type C. Not sure why they didn't, once again, make the "bed" that the iPad fits into interchangeable, with a Type C interface.
