Disclaimer: I know very little about computers and need help.

I have a 2009 MacBook that was working well until a magnet was set on top of the hard drive and it died.

I replaced the hard drive with a new SSD and it still won’t start. I know it’s possible that the computer is dead completely, but is there something else I might be missing? Anything else I need to do to get it to start, or could I have possibly installed it incorrectly?

Thanks!
[doublepost=1547269520][/doublepost]I was actually able to get it started and now I have a grey screen with a question mark. I cannot seem to get any further than this, it looks like it’s not recognizing the hard drive.

Thanks. I tried that last night and it didn’t work unfortunately. Too old probably.
[doublepost=1547325072][/doublepost]Not a silly question at all- especially since I seriously have no idea what I am doing!

And the answer is no... I have an external hard drive with my time machine backup, can I do it with that or...?

Silly question perhaps, but did you install OS X on the new SSD?
[doublepost=1547325132][/doublepost]This is helpful! So I just need to get the dvd and put that in you think?

That Mac is too old to have Internet recovery, so you are going to need to make yourself a USB key installer on another Mac. I notice there are sellers on Amazon selling the Lion OS X installer DVD, so that would also work for you.

Your computer is ok, then. Command + R and us internet recovery to reinstall OSX or create a bootable recovery usb from another Mac

The 2009 MacBook does not support Internet Recovery, as was mentioned in post #4 of the thread.
