I don't really like the chime either, but I don't want my computer to play a whole jingle when I turn it on. I seldom turn off my desktop, so I don't mind much about that. I wish the laptops had no startup chime though... It's horrible when you're in quiet, public place and your MacBook makes a loud chime.

Just make sure you put the Macbook's volume at its lowest before you shut down.

I also find it quite embarrassing when I open up my MB in a seminar and it chimes.

Anybody heard the chime being used in Futurama? Oh, and they've ripped of the 1984 advert in it as well if I remember correctly.

I've noticed that even as far back as win 3.11 you could custimize the start sound to anything you wanted, but the Impression I get after reading this thread is that the sound is part of the boot/startup process than the OS startup and It is a nice happy sound.
Although a nice little external vol control wouldn't hurt....just remember to have It set the right way when your at the library.

Windows plays that little tune when it starts up (by default, it can be changed or turned off), but this is not the start-up sound. On a PC, it's the screechy beep you hear when you press the power button, known officially as the POST (power-on self-test) sound. It's in the boot ROM and indicates that the low-level I/O hardware is working. The Mac equivalent POST sound is the chord we all know so well.
