The LG miniLED 5k display is available to preorder for $1200: https://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-27gm950b-b-gaming-monitor

This seems like you are getting the same panel as the Studio Display XDR with the additional benefit of additional inputs and higher refresh rates (165 Hz at 5K, 330 Hz at 1440p) but without the Thunderbolt or downstream USB-C ports, Webcam or speakers for a lower price than the basic Studio Display.
There's a lot we don't know about what LG is doing with the UltraGear 5K and how it compares to the Studio Display XDR. Primarily, what is "Hyper MiniLED" (9,216 LEDs in 2,304 zones) and how does that array compare to the MiniLED array Apple is using?

I think we can assume Hyper MiniLED is an improvement upon the backlighting found in the Studio Display. We can hope, I think, that there will be some clarity soon with regard to how it compares to the Studio Display XDR.

If you look at the high-end array used in the $8,799 ASUS ProArt 8K, you'll see it uses expensive, next-generation LEDs (see attached screen shot). My assumption (emphasis on "assumption") is that Apple uses something similar, and LG's approach in the UltraGear is a cost-cutting measure.

The Asus ProArt 6K? This comment here? https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...s.2459226/page-21?post=34546524#post-34546524

I was initially concerned about the colours, but honestly, if they are good enough for you (given your occupation), they are likely to be good enough for me. So long as I don't have to create a new colour profile more than monthly.

Thanks for your help.

I was thinking yesterday that I might need to sell my 57" monitor because I was gettign dizzy looking at it. Turns out I just have some kinda whack cold (sore throat today and just feeling crappy/brain foggy now).

But yeaaaah the reviews on that proart 6k 32" sound VERY VERY positive. If it were me, I'd order one of those from amazon and grab a studio display from an apple store and compare them for a few days.

The big pro with the proart display: You get 3 inputs (I think) so you can switch between multiple computers easily. It's 5" bigger and that much higher resolution. I don't think it has fans? Maybe it does. Height adjustable!

Pro with the studio display: it starts up quickly. Shiny screen. Nice aluminum chassis. Built-in webcam and good speakers. TERRIBLE for use with multiple computers.

I think as nice as the glass screen is, people blow that out of proportion. Antiglare screens CAN be decent. My old 34" LG 3440x1440 ultrawide had a really good antiglare that showed no grain at all and had decently sharp text. In my experience, Dell and Samsung are terrible at this with their LCD screens. Dell antiglare is awful. LG can be pretty good. I've never used an asus screen.

Correct - Thunderbolt, DP and HDMI inputs, plus built-in KVM between the Thunderbolt and one other input of your choosing.
No fans.
The stand is height & tilt adjustable and will rotate 90° (if you really want to rotate a 32" display), but of course it's not engineered to the same degree as Apple's. It's steel covered by plastic.

I think the aluminum case of Apple’s displays is purely cosmetic. It does not make the display last longer or produce better image quality. Looks really cool though.

Of course it is, purely cosmetic. Just like 18K gold on for example Rolex watches. Gold doesn't produce more accurate time, but it looks really cool. In fact, sometimes a plastic Casio watch can produce more accurate time than Rolex.

You're not wrong!

Apple's displays (and iMacs) are made for people who can't stand a screen creaking when they adjust it. hahah.

My 57" samsung odyssey doesn't just creak when you adjust it. If you leave it running for more than a few hours and get it all nice and warmed up, and then you turn it off and it cools down? It'll make a random pop or two as the plastic housing shrinks from the heat dissipating LOL. The build

Anyway, for me the good news is I literally had a weird cold or something. So I guess I won't be buying the 32" or the studio display after all for now lol.

While true, it does make them more stable/solid than others. Pushing on the edge of a Studio Display does not result in the whole thing creaking and torquing. Do that with any Dell, HP or Asus and the whole thing will wobble and precess for a bit.

Sure, my 27” will wobble for about 3 seconds. Is that worth $500 to $2,000 to me? No. Does it make the monitor more durable? I don’t think so. The beautiful appearance is fabulous, though. Whether it is worth the added cost is a personal decision.

In a MacBook Air or Pro, the aluminum case makes the computer more durable. I totally buy into that, hands down, ten thousand percent!

Hey, preaching to the choir. I just replaced a 2022 27" Studio Display with an Asus ProArt 32" 6K.

Oh?
What do you think? I was torn between the Asus and the LG 32 inch 6K. I chose the LG. I got a very good price from Best Buy, and it’s local so I can just take it back if I don’t like it. It arrives next week.

Reviewers are so difficult to follow. Some hate the LG, some love it. It looks as though there is variation amongst units. Or maybe very picky reviewers.

I made a few long posts about it in the 6K forum thread. I've never seen the LG in person, so I can't make a direct comparison. But I am extremely satisfied with my purchase.
Actually bought two. One for my personal Mac, one for my WFH PC. Both units look exactly the same picture-wise.
