i bought the series 1 mostly for notifications not an outside runner so need for gps but I do attend the gym and run on treadmill I was told to get better results may need to carry phone and run for at least 20minutes outside to help Calibrate so when I do run on treadmill it may yield better results is this correct.

Yes, this is correct. The watch starts with a default stride length. I don't think I have ever seen what it is. Then, when you run outdoors with the phone, it uses GPS data to calculate a stride length. So, you will not get accurate treadmill distance on the AW until you do the outdoor automatic calibration.
