Down south
Got a HomePod mini yesterday and set it up. My excuse for finally getting one was that today is my oldest granddaughter’s birthday party, Harry Potter themed, at my house, and I want to have HP soundtracks playing in the background during the party. Yes I’m sure there was another way to do it, but I wanted a HomePod mini, so I’m using that as my reason. ;-p

Anyway, it never wanted to set up with my phone - kept telling me I needed to set up Apple Music (which is done), and also set up two-factor authentication (also done). I tried setting it up with my ipad pro, and it worked with zero issues.

It seems to be connected to my phone now as well. It shows up in the Home app on both devices as connected.

My questions are:

Will it use either device? How do I know which it’s using, or does that even matter? Usually both of those devices will be in the vicinity of the HomePod.

Software updates - do I need to do those directly on the Homepod, or through the phone or iPad? How will I know when they’re needed?

Oh, and just gonna throw a couple more questions out there because, in spite of all the posts on here about these being crappy, I’m kinda liking mine. I’m wondering, if you add a second one, and it’s not really far away, does it connect with the first in the sense that they do the same thing? How do you speak to one and not the other? How do you make them do separate things?

I know I can probably find all this out there somewhere, but I’m pretty techno challenged, especially with these kind of things because we are in a rural area where we’ve never had good enough wifi to have things like this, and I’m hoping someone can just give me a quick rundown I can actually understand.

Thanks for the help!

1. You can use either/any device to control the mini, or just your voice. The mini is its own thing and works independently. Simplest way is via the home app but you can also use the standard media controls to connect to it.
2. Software updates are also done thru Home. Do a long-press on the mini’s Home app button, then scroll down to see all the settings.
3. You can add a second one to make a stereo pair, or use them both standalone. The devices use some special sauce (time of flight etc) to decide which one you are talking to. It usually works as expected.

Enjoy your mini and your party :)

Thank you! So far I’m enjoying it. I love that if a song comes on I don’t like and my hands are buried in the sink washing dirty pots, I can tell it to skip it. Simple I know, but it’s a fun perk!

I’m already wanting a second one. I think the sound would be really nice if I had a second one in my kitchen, which is pretty open to the den where the other one is.

Ok good to know it’s not affecting everyone.

In case you should happen to get another one and run into an issue setting it up, refer to this…

I actually saw and read that thread around the same time I posted this one. I‘ll definitely remember to look it up if I have any issues when I add a second one.

Of course I did have issues setting up from my phone, as I mentioned in the original post. I wound up using my iPad.

Ah yes… well was your iPad also on iPadOS 15? I also had trouble setting it up with my iPad which was on 15.

for controlling what plays where from your phone....

with multiple HomePods, in theory only 1 should respond to you. They talk amongst themselves in the background, and figure out which one should actually respond. Your phone/watch/iPad/Mac also get into this. If you've got your phone up and active in front of you, it will probably answer "hey Siri" over the HomePod. You'll might see everything activate, and all but one should turn themselves off after a moment.

as far as what plays where, In the home app, you assign homepods to a room, you can control where it plays using those rooms.

For updates, you do it in the home app. You can also set automatic, and it will take care of itself. It might default to automatic updates on.

Actually, no. I just realized I’ve never updated my iPad to 15 - it’s still on 14.8. Oops.

Maybe I should go ahead and get another HomePod and set it up before I update my software on my iPad. ;-p

HomePod minis are addictive and tend to multiply in your home. Get a second one and make a stereo pair with your first one. Greatly enhances the sound. Additional minis in different rooms will give you perfectly synched multi-room audio.

This is what I’m afraid of!

A-ha!

Lol ?

Yeah, if you don’t have Mac and plan on getting another HomePod, hold off on updating.

Once updated to its software version 15.1.1, will HomePod mini still play on iPhone running iOS 14.8.1?

Thank you. -KM
