I will get downvoted for saying this but I would advise purchasing the iPad 2 if price is a major consideration. I have owned iPad 1, 2, and now 3 and 2 is my favorite thus far. When I purchased the iPad 2, I felt it was a major step up in every way from iPad 1: lighter, thinner, noticeably faster processing, etc. I think there were some major compromises made in order to bring the retina display to the 3. Yes, it has a faster processor and more RAM but that is all utilized in producing retina images. Charge time is around 6.5 hours (about double). Display is dimmer than 2 at any setting (verified by Apple rep) so I find myself running brightness at a higher level to get a bright screen and thus battery life is noticeably shorter. It runs warmer at brightness >50% (and hot at high brightness levels) which I think can't be good for long-term battery life. My screen has a definite pinkish cast to it although this unit does have a uniform screen.
As for the argument that the retina display is a must, I just don't see it. I think retina makes a bigger difference on my iPhone than the iPad, for whatever reason. I read A LOT on my iPad and I just don't see the retina being a game-changer in regard to reading on the iPad.
The camera is definitely better but I never use it on the iPad as it is unwieldy. I use my 4s for photo taking.
The one indisputable benefit I have found to the iPad 3 is Verizon LTE. It is much snappier than my AT&T iPad 2 HSPA speeds.
If my husband hadn't taken my iPad 2, I would have returned the 3 and happily continued on with iPad 2 and saved my money until the 4th generation is
released. Knowing Apple, some of these issues will be addressed/resolved with the next model.
I would not advise buying anything with less than 32GB memory. Go for 32 or 64GB iPad 2 if you can't afford 32GB iPad 3.
