As much as I'd love to buy a 64GB new iPad, that's way out of my budget. I'm really stuck in the 300-400 GBP mark, so I'd be stuck with a 16GB New iPad.

If I were to buy the 16GB iPad and store approx. 5GB of Audio/Video, would I have enough space left for Apps?

Id say with all of that, you might be right at the full line most of the time, but IMO that's a well worth trade off for the retina display. If you plan to use it often for reading, the new iPad is a no brainer

Well, interestingly enough, I do indeed plan on taking my comic book collection digital when I get the iPad. You think that would be a worthwhile use of the Retina Display?

Ah, comic books! Yes, much easier to read the words in the speech bubbles on a retina display.

But storing a large comic collection might take some space -- are you sure you can't save up for a 32 GB? I always hate not having my entire collection with me -- oh, I'm in the mood to reread Spiderman; oh bummer, I only have Superman and X-Men with me!

My only issue with the 32GB is the price. 479GBP is almost 100 more than I was planning on spending...

Thanks for the advice though. I'm taking everything on board

I bought a refurbished 32gb iPad last week and love it, the screen still looks great and I have no problem using it for reading. The camera sucks, but I would never use it even if it was good. I say save your money unless you have bad eyes or have trouble looking at a screen I guess?

If you do get the new iPad at least get the 32gb, I have 18gb left on my 32, with 6 movies ( about 4.5 gb total), no songs, 33 applications (only two of them big games)

I am 17, the iPad 2 screen looks fine to me, I personally didn't want to spend $200 extra for a 32gb new iPad

LET'S GO HEAT!

If you know anyone who will visit Thailand ask them to get you one and bring it back. A iPad 3 32 WiFi is a little over £400 here and Apple stores are plentiful. 1GBP = 48 Thai Baht.

You can get it cheaper refurbished, and it looks brand new.. No scratches, new battery, and a year warranty. Look up a unboxing video of refurb iPad 2 on YT.

I bought an iPad in september to do most of the things that you are you using it for.

First I would go into itunes and download some of the apps that you want to use to have an idea of how much storage you will need.

I've been doing lots of reading with my iPad, I find that when I read for an extended period of time I get eye strained. The Retina display offers a much sharper screen. In a school environment I found myself to use the iPad's camera quite often while taking class notes, Usually for graphs. In that field the new iPad is much better than the iPad 2. Games, especially upcoming games will take more space and use more advance graphics where the new iPad will shine.

The new ipad does run warmer then the iPad 2 it is also a bit heavier (not much).

Having an iPad 2, I don't particularly see the need to get the new iPad. The iPad 2 is a great device.

In any case, I see the ipad having a turn around life of about 2 years. The fourth iPad will have the same features people love in the new iPad and some extra goodies.

Ultimately the choice is ours.

I will get downvoted for saying this but I would advise purchasing the iPad 2 if price is a major consideration. I have owned iPad 1, 2, and now 3 and 2 is my favorite thus far. When I purchased the iPad 2, I felt it was a major step up in every way from iPad 1: lighter, thinner, noticeably faster processing, etc. I think there were some major compromises made in order to bring the retina display to the 3. Yes, it has a faster processor and more RAM but that is all utilized in producing retina images. Charge time is around 6.5 hours (about double). Display is dimmer than 2 at any setting (verified by Apple rep) so I find myself running brightness at a higher level to get a bright screen and thus battery life is noticeably shorter. It runs warmer at brightness >50% (and hot at high brightness levels) which I think can't be good for long-term battery life. My screen has a definite pinkish cast to it although this unit does have a uniform screen.

As for the argument that the retina display is a must, I just don't see it. I think retina makes a bigger difference on my iPhone than the iPad, for whatever reason. I read A LOT on my iPad and I just don't see the retina being a game-changer in regard to reading on the iPad.

The camera is definitely better but I never use it on the iPad as it is unwieldy. I use my 4s for photo taking.

The one indisputable benefit I have found to the iPad 3 is Verizon LTE. It is much snappier than my AT&T iPad 2 HSPA speeds.

If my husband hadn't taken my iPad 2, I would have returned the 3 and happily continued on with iPad 2 and saved my money until the 4th generation is
released. Knowing Apple, some of these issues will be addressed/resolved with the next model.

I would not advise buying anything with less than 32GB memory. Go for 32 or 64GB iPad 2 if you can't afford 32GB iPad 3.

Thank you koigirl, although you have really muddied the waters for me. I'm now erring on the side of a larger capactiy iPad 2 over iPad 3 16GB....

I agree with everything kiogirl said...iPad 2 is still a great device. I think in your Budget situation you would appreciation the extra storage over retina screen. It's nice but it's not like iPad 2 is garbage. IPad 2 is still one of the best tablets to own today.

As a sort of follow up to this thread, the announcement of Siri for iPad today has sort of shifted me much further onto the iPad 3 sort of the spectrum. That said, will Siri be available on WiFi iPads or just LTE models?

Is Siri really that big of a deal to you? To me I would almost never use on my iPad when I think about it..

It's not just Siri, there's also the fact that iPad 1 has been phased out of iOS updates so quickly that I'm slightly reluctant to get an iPad 2....

Why? The iPad 2 and 3 share the same CPU and the 3 has a beefed up version of the iPad 2 GPU. Internal memory was bumped up in the iPad 3 as well a beefed up camera. That's pretty much it. I have no need for Siri since I have WiFi iPad's. The iPad 2 should get a few iOS updates because both the 2 and 3 are pretty close in performance.

When did Apple stick to logic when deciding which updates to give which gen? iPhone 4 should have no problem running Siri, but Apple's kept it for 4S only. Just because 2 and 3 share the same CPU, don't count on Apple giving them the same software updates. They might, but again, they might not.
