New to Mac mini

I love the ability to to have my imessages come through my MAC as I message a lot but the issues I am running into is this: There might be a few days I don't use the MAC then when I wake it up I have a flood of messages come through which is annoying. They are all day old messages that I have deleted off my phone and I no longer need/want them. Is there a way to stop this rush of messages coming in or not?
