Just setting up my new 6-core stock Mac mini. Returned my 2018 13" i5/8GB/512GB TouchBar MBP to Apple for a refund as it was my second laptop with issues and it was costing me time and money to keep driving 140 miles to Apple to get it repaired under Apple Care..

Now I've got a reliable, hopefully long-lasting machine with power and speed to spare.

I have over £800 difference (from what I paid for my MBP) on an Apple Gift Card, thinking of buying a new iPad for portability and taking notes etc when out and about, and having the Mac mini as a workstation I can take to work / use at home with just a monitor / keyboard / mouse setup at each desk.

Seems a more sensible way to work with the Mac and be portable rather than having my eggs in one very expensive £2,000+ basket!

One thing... does iCloud Keychain sync 'Secure Notes'? I have a Time Machine backup on an encrypted HDD... the key was stored in Secure Notes. Unsure if it is waiting to sync across or if that was gone when I wiped my MBP and gave it back to Apple... oops.

Secure notes do sync but it will depend how you setup iCloud Keychain - if you opt out of something (I forget what terminology it uses) no keychain data is stored in iCloud and syncing is done peer to peer with another of your machines.

I didn't opt out of anything specific. Still, all my web passwords are now here and no secure note (there was just one). Damn.

Tomorrow at 9am I'll be spending a long time downloading my apps again if it doesn't magically appear, oops!!

Oh, I realised that I specifically use the “iCloud” keychain (on the left) when creating secure notes, and not the local set of secure notes. Sorry for the mistake!

Seems like I’ll never be able to get back into that hard drive!

Something I'm noticing is that the WiFi is really poor vs the iPhone and MacBooks on the Mac mini. Moving it helps but not much. I'm at work now where we normally have quite decent enterprise Wifi but I'm getting 1mbps on Ookla Speed Test. Hmmm... hardware fault or design flaw or?

This is my new work setup:
