Alex...by 'Mac's PDF opener' did you mean Preview?

If not, you might want to try setting Preview as your default...or at least try opening a PDF with that. I have never had any issues opening PDFs with Preview.

MSTRZ... Preview is probably the name, as "preview, glance, glimpse" is what "aperçu" translates to (I've not seen the Mac menu headings in English).

So, I must have used Preview, if that the default pdf tool that comes with OS X. I was surprised too, as I didn't recall ever having had a problem saving a pdf to disk. But Adobe made the difference.

I even had a couple of exchanges with the Swiss Rail tech staff, and they told me there were no "authorization" constraints that would prevent saving the pdf to disk. But the menu option to "save" in Aperçu never was "on" (just that faint gray font indicating the option is not available). Turns out Swiss Rail was right; no problem with Adobe.

I should point out that I was able to open the pdf with Preview, just not save it.

Although the point should be made that lately, OS X is just as hard (or easy, depending on your viewpoint) to hack as Windows. They're both very good at keeping virus's out. The big issue now is that people (in general) are stupid and install programs that are adware or spyware. No OS will protect you from your own stupidity, and that is where anti-virus programs like Norton are good to have. As OS X becomes more popular, mac users are going to find out the hard way that they should be careful on OS X too.

I know. I'm still paranoid about viruses. I was "careful" with my brand new netbook (Asus 1000HE, Win XP) and now it's sitting here completely infected with sysguard.exe virus that I'm going to have to fix somehow, some way. It has locked me out of my own documents, photos, everything. I called Asus today and they said I have to back up everything before they help me because what they are going to do will result in wipeout.

So while I would LOVE to throw caution to the wind and say my iMac does not need a VP program, I just don't think I can do it.

My desktop Dell is also sitting here, infected with something (probably a number of somethings) and I'm unable to connect to the internet. So two sick computers prompted me to get a Mac, and I think I better have some kind of VP for it, no matter how slim the risk.

How can you get something that doesnt exist?

There are no viruses for OSX. None. Nada. Zilch. Zero. 0.00.

It would be easier to find a unicorn in your backyard. :p

If "slim"="never" then we are on the same page, there is no risk.

Skip it.

Okay, Badger, but if I should be the first person on earth to get a Mac virus, are you going to come here and fix it for me? :p

But I would LOVE to find a unicorn.... :)
