New to Mac-which apps to get?

VMWare Fusion or Parallels. For those terrible times when you still need to run PC software. For me Visio, Quickbooks (PC and Mac versions are completely incompatible), Word (Word for Mac lacks certain features needed for lawyers), and a few other things cause me to have to run a VM every once in awhile. I also keep Java off of my Mac and have a VM just for the few websites I have to use that require Java. Plus, VMs make it easy to try new operating systems without messing up your main desktop.

Recent favourites:

Jumpycut - clipboard history
BetterTouchTool - mouse gestures galore
PushToTalk - Microphone only activates when you hold down a key (useful for heavy skype use)

I was where you are two years ago and here's a few apps I use :

Display Menu : change resolution from the menu bar - particularly useful on the riMac !

BetterTouchTool : gestures on Mac are amazing. They become amazingly amazing with this app.

SmashTunes : Display the current track playing in the menu bar and the most important controls (used with iTunes)

Ubersicht or GeekTool : display stuff on the desktop (OS commands, weather...)

TinkerTool : Customize the fonts used by native Mac OS apps (Used it during my first few weeks on Mac)

Bartender : organize the menu bar, it can get messy fast.

Deliveries : I'm Amazon best customer. This app saved my sanity (and you can also sync it on your iphone or ipad)

Other apps that I love but you may not need :

Day One : awesome journaling app

Growl : notifications. Haven't tested it on Yosemite though.

iStat mini : display memory, CPU and disk usage in the notification center.

Pocket : save web pages to read them later on any device

And the ones that I also use on Windows :

MS office. Sorry, never could get used to Numbers and I'm a heavy Excel user, so I got it just for Excel through the HUP program. It's not nearly as good as the Windows version but good enough.

1password : Mandatory.

Kindle and Calibre

Evernote

Dropbox

Sublime Text

Thunderbird : I hate Mail as much as I do Outlook

Wunderlist : Todo list

How does OmniFocus compare with Things or Wunderlist? I'm testing Things out right now but it's pricey to get all the versions.

Also, in lieu of VLC, I'd download MplayerX
