It looks like Apple only provides the Quick Start Guide. But if you're looking for something pretty comprehensive, you might want to take a look at this book, which should help you out with a lot of the questions you have with OS X.

Missing Manual is very comprehensive. Good reference for the new MBA.

Just ordered a used copy of that book. Looks good to have around.

Firefox sizing question

I'm experimenting with browsers with my new mac air, and I'm thinking I like firefox better than safari. Mostly because I can have colorful logo icons next to my bookmarks instead of just the word "yahoo" or whatever, because I can set it to trace no history, and because I can choose a 15 or 16 point font size. (Safari offers me either 14 or 18, but nothing inbetween.)

Except there's one problem: in my yahoo email account, there is annoying bleeding. The words "sort by date" get truncated, or there's a part of the rich text options bleeding onto my compose or reply page.

This doesn't seem to happen with safari, regardless of screen scaling or text size changes. Also doesn't seem to happen with firefox in hotmail or facebook.

Any way to fix this yahoo/firefox problem? Or any other helpful hints for customizing a nice big easy to see browser experience?

Those instructions look a bit complex, though maybe it sounds more complicated than it is.

I agree it is a bit intimidating. You just have to sit and read it over and tinker with the extension. Many of the advanced features in those instructions can be ignored as you will likely not use them.

today's question

In attempting to transfer a bunch of documents from my old computer to the mac via flash drive, a bunch of files ended up copied to my desktop. Like possibly hundreds, all hiding within one folder. Some are pics, some are docs, etc.

They seem to all be grouped under one icon. Is there any easy way to get rid of them all? When I attempt to drag the folder/icon into the trash, it empties the current file -- but then another one takes its place. (Presumably whatever the next file is.) At this rate, I'll have to manually 'trash' each one.

What to do? If the only solution is to wipe clean my entire desktop somehow and start over, I'd be willing to that since I only had a couple of things there anyway.

Click on your desktop then hit shift-command-g (all three at once) then paste in the below command and hit enter. That will bring up a Finder window that lists everything on your desktop. Hit command-2 to make all the files show in a list. You can click the different column headers to help you sort and it will be easier to see what is there in the Finder list.

From there you can drag whatever you want to the trash.

If you want to delete everything in the list hit command-a and that will select all the files and you can drag them to the trash.

~/Desktop

Next question!

I somehow ended up with a bunch of copies of some photos I transferred to my Mac. How can I find and delete each one easily?

Where are the duplicate photos? Do you mean you dragged dups into iPhoto?

There is not really any good, built in way to find dups in iPhoto. There are some after market programs that will do it for you, like Duplicate Annihilator.

I don't think they are in iphoto. They are in a folder on my desktop I made called 'my photos'. I somehow copied and pasted them twice I guess.

How many photos are we talking about? If they were named the same when you copied them over you should had gotten a popup warning you?

Think we're talking about a 100. If I got a pop up, I don't remember it, and apparently didn't heed it.

The copies are all now named something like "dscj321copy". (Whatever the regular photo was called, plus the word copy.)

Just open the Finder and in the left pane navigate to the folder on your Desktop. Then in the search box at the top right type in copy and that should list just the files with copy at the end. Do a command-a to select them all then drag to trash.

Before you empty the trash go back to the folder and make sure you got the result you wanted.

Bingo! Thanks again.

here's a new one

Suddenly today I've noticed a very faint clicking sound at random times coming from somwhere on my laptop. Heard it maybe a dozen times today, sometimes seconds apart, others not for a long time. It doesn't seem to correspond to any known notifications I have, and might not even be loud enough for such notifications anyway.

Very mysterious. Any theories?

Hmmm... your Air pretty much has no moving parts inside other than fans, so I don't get it.

Read this over and run Apple Diagnostics and see if that shows anything.

If it keeps doing it, I would take it in to Apple for a look. Definitely not normal.

Yes, rather odd. Hopefully just some freak thing.

Haven't heard the clicking again, so didn't bother with diagnostic. Hopefully gone forever.

New issue: My internet seems intermittantly slower today, with pages sometimes slow to load and messages slow to send on occasion. The network seems fine, so I suspect the Mac itself is the issue. Kinda reminds me of using my old windows computers:) A touch virus-y or something. Nothing major, but a tad slower now and then.

I was hoping this would never happen with Mac, but since it has, what is one supposed to do?

There aren't any Mac viruses in the wild at this point, but there is some malware floating around. If you have kept your system updated it is extremely unlikely you have any type of infection.

When this happens, can you do an Internet speed test and see if your speeds are still good? There really isn't any setting or anything in OS X that would cause this.

Thanks. I'll look into this internet speed test thing if the problem persists.

Get Thee to an Apple Store

After you view the stores website on www.apple.com/retail and see what workshops are available. If you find one you like, reserve yourself a spot in it. Apple Stores regularly put on a lot of good workshops, including a 'welcome to mac' basic course. They're mac and even computer newbie friendly, don't require a recent purchase to attend, and are-best of all-free.

Does anyone know if the Mac Air's have good lifespans? What long can one expect these machines to last, and how does that compare to other laptops?

My daughter's 2011 mac air 11" is already dying, and I'm leery of getting her another one if it's going to die in less than 2 years. (I hoping mine will last more than 2 years as well.)

tone

Any way to kill that loud audible tone upon start up? I'd prefer the machine silent. No need to announce to the world around me that I'm turning on my Mac.
