So I am new to MacBooks (but long time iMac owner). Never really dug into ‘looking’ for problems, but started reading these boards after opening x-mass and now I’ve been testing everything on my new MBP 16 2.3 with 32 RAM and 8GB grfx card.

I do not seem to have any issues with audio popping, Coil whine or ghosting. BUT according to iStatX the temp seems High. Literally after doing nothing or being asleep in a 67 degree room the temp constantly jumps between 98-125 degrees farenheight. (Is it measuring different cores? Or why does it keep jumping around every second?) I thought I read on some apple page it should be 50-100?

Also the fan seems to always be around 1300-1400rpm. Even if I run cinebench 2 or 3 times in a row the fans CLEARLY spin up (ie I can hear them getting loud) but the RPM stays the same? I can feel it getting warm on my legs but the temp stays in the same range? Problem with iStatX? Is there another app that people suggest?

Anything other than Better Touch Tool? Or is that the best?

Battery is at 2 cycles and according to coconut battery max capacity jumps between 8625 and 8777 - so that seems normal and I know it will take a few days to sort itself out... although it does seem like no way it would last 8+ hours even with light safari browsing. Is Safari really better than chrome for battery life? Is there a consensus on best practices (ie leave it plugged in 90% of the time, drain it all the way sometimes, only drain to 20% sometimes????

I know there are long threads on docks /hubs. Just need something good enough for plugging in various usb WD passport and Lacie rugged drives and SD cards, and connecting to HDMI monitors for presentations? IS there a much better one?I bought a QGeeM hub

Best briefcase / shoulder bag WITH corner protection?

Any other tips / must have apps for mabbook pro newbie?

THX

Good on you!
...but...I’ve been testing everything...
Biggest mistake ever. Stop looking and just enjoy your machine. There is so much more you can be learning or exploring:

Keep in mind that a new machine will need to execute spotlight indexing, so even if you have nothing running, the machine will be searching and indexing all the files, which takes a great deal of processing power and produces heat. If you don't have any of the problems that other folks have had, keep what you've got and enjoy it. Be sure to get AppleCare, no matter what. If the overheating is a real issue, Apple will fix any problem it causes within 3 years, but only if you have AppleCare.

You are reading the temps in Fahrenheit not Celsius. The temps 50-100 in Apple site is referring to Celsius temp.

Your temp is normal.

LOL - yes I'm looking at F not C on temp. Do you know why it keeps jumping around? Cant change 10-15 degrees in 1 sec. And about the fan speed? Any other app suggestions? Looking through the link in the post #2... seems fairly basic so far though.

This is 100% normal. The only time you need to worry about operating temperature is if your computer is in an enclosed space or sitting where it's vents are being blocked (like on a soft blanket or up against something blocking the vent). Even then the computer will shut itself off if it gets too hot.
