New to OSX Question

I've noticed when I open files in OSX periodically, that both Text Edit and Preview will open as well. Can someone tell me why this is? I find it very annoying to have to repeatedly shut down a blank Text Edit and Preview window. Is there anyway to force OSX not to do this? I'm running 10.4.7. Thanks in advance.

note: file I most recently opened was a zip file

Right click (control click) the file > open with > other > then choose your application... near the bottom left corner of the window, click on the box "Always open with".
