new Toshiba HDD, no access..!??

Hi there,
I have a MacBook Pro and have used a WD Passport as external HD for over 3 years. I have just bought another external HD, a Toshiba 1TB. When I connect it by USB, it shows up as 'Untitled' in Finder under devices, but I cannot do anything with it..??? Cannot drag documents to it, cannot save documents to it etc.
Can anyone help.??

Disk Utility -> Choose file system as HFS+ or MS-DOS and erase.

Format the drive under disk utility... Erase...

Are you gonna use the drive with Windows too?

Then you might wanna format it exFat rather than HFS+
